Mylord,
It affords me great gratification to report to your Lordship that under Divine Providence our progress in the Yang-tze-keang has been most propitious, the shores of this mighty river being first operative upon most successful. His Excellency Sir Her Parker, who I will beg leave to mention accompanied us throughout all our operations before Chusan and the Yang-tze-keang, and from whom I have upon this as upon all other occasions perceived the most cordial and able support, will no doubt enter fully into detail upon all the subject, particularly within the Naval department; I shall therefore very slightly touch on them.
We arrived off Woosung the 6th, after many unavoidable delays in bringing up the sail of men of war and transports, amounting to 70 in total, most part totally uncentered, to the first point of opposition, Poo Sung Shian. Opposition, if it can be so termed, was met until the 11th.
