The collision case at the Supreme Court, fully reported in this issue, raised no knotty point of law. It was a question of fact, and there was some hard swearing.
There was something appropriate about the fact of the Hon. F. H. May, lecturing an "Irish wit" to the Union Church Literary Club on the 17th inst. The Colonial Secretary is Irish, and he is witty. He is Hongkong's best post-prandial orator.
Harmston's circus opened in Hongkong this last week, and is expecting to stay about month. The tent is nightly packed with Chinese, who are amazed and delighted by most of the "turns." The show is also very popular
with the blasé Europeans.
The rumour from Home that the so-called "Brodrick" cap is to be done away with has raised hopes at Hongkong that it may turn out. headgear, for true. The "cooky-German" which Mr. Brodrick has pleaded not guilty, is quite prominent and hideous in Hongkong streets.
At the Sanitary Board meeting, Dr. Atkin- son issued a warning that shipping people would do well to take note of. He had learnedTM- that some ships visiting the port were buying their water from Chinese junks, at cheap rates, and he announced that this water was being. drawn from filthily polluted sources.
Hongkong lawyers are putting their heads together over a point of law arising from the pawnbroking Ordinance. It says articles pledged must be redeemed within three months the ticket allows, six. The question is, does the Ordinance mean three months from contract time, or from date of pledging? A pawnbroker's son had taken a ring during the second three months, and when the owner came to redeem it, the pawnbroker could not or would not deliver it.

A band of Chinese pirates has commenced operations in the creeks of the New Territory. close to Hongkong. Some of their victims (junk men) are at the Civil Hospital, badly
wounded.

There is a wild rumour being circulated to the effect that the editor of Bradshaw going to make that famous railway guide intelligible. We swait (with considerable doubt) confirmation.
The Interport oricket matches were favoured - with glorious weather. Opening on the 12th wickets and three runs. This brought Tuesday. when Singapore played the defeated team. At first Singapore looked like losing, but on Wednesday Shanghai had the mortification of another beating, losing the two innings match by 52 runs 283-231. Hongkong and the Straits finished just as we went to Preas. The Straits won by 195 runs. On the first evening, Nov. 12th, the Cricket Club gave an elaborate garden fête, which was followed by a supper and a dance at the Hongkong Club. The Governor, in addition to inviting all the cricketers to the ball, had them up to dinner on the 18th. The festivities wind up with a smoking concert.
