It is to early yet to say what yachts will compete in the Handicap Class, but they will probably be the same as last season.

We understand that the Commodore-Hon F. H. May, C.M.G.-has offered a cup to be competed for by large cruisers. If this race fills it will make a revival of the racing of larger yachts, which used to be so popular here in days gone by.

The practice scores of the substitutes average over 91 per man, against the above average, made by the men who have left, of 87 per man; and the old men have considerably improved. Hongkong's team, perhaps, is as strong as it has ever been before.

SHANGHAI.

Shanghai, of course, fired off on the 6th inst. A good light prevailed and a steady wind blow across the range. While shooting at the 600 yard range between the third and fifth shot a change occurred in the shape of a mirage which som what disconcerted the competitors. Mr. C. Hill did some remarkable shooting, making thirteen bulls-eyes in the first thirteen shots. The full table of scores is as follows

From 1889 to 1894 the match was fired with the Mrtini-Henry rifle; from 1895 onwards with the Lee-Metford. The increase of the scores with the introduction of the new rifle is very marked, for whereas the greatest score- that of Hongkong in 1891-with th Martini- Henry rifle was 867, the competition has never been won on a score below 900 with the Lee Metford. Penang entered the competition for the first time in 1901, and has held the "wooden spoon ever since.

She has been seen in the harbour, under weigh, in the hands of Miss Stella May, the youngest member of the Club, but by no means the least experienced at the tiller. The new sails show a most artistic cut, and promise very favourably. Last year's champion, Vernon, has not been Been out yet. Her lugsail was sent home to have some alterations made in it by Messrs. Ratsey and Lapthorne. Till her owner's re arn, she in charge of Mr. John Hastings; At the Interport practice on the 1th inst. and in his experienced hands ought to give a eight members of Hongkong's team scored very good account of herself.
