Shanghai, 25th August.

Trade

Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co., in their Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, statë: Urgent orders have continued to come froin New- chwang for Piece Goods, chiefly American, and it is said the Tientsin men have been reselling freely at bandsome profits. The well-informed Natives here declare there are not 2,000 bales of those i makes unsold. The probable shortage of the Native Cloth this year, owing to the interrupton of the Junk trade no doubt accounts largely for the demand; ride our remarks below. with our other dependencies is falling into com- parative insignificance. Very satisfactory reports come from Corea, but the scarcity of tonnage is greatly hampering the trade. It is not at all creditable that, notwithstanding the bulk of the Foreign trude with that country is in English goods, not a single steamer flying the British Flag is engaged in the Coast trade, which has to be dependent on occasional visits of steamers belonging to other Nations that have no interest in the cargo beyond carrying it. Manchester is strong and advancing, and manufacturers for the most art are fully engaged for months ahead.

1 Cotton continues to rise, the Liverpool market being excited. The last quotations received were 6.54 for Mid American and 72d for Egyptian. In the States Futures have gone up about 15% in the last three or four weeks. Conflicting rumours respecting the crop are being spread about, and the impression is gaining ground that in spite of the increased acreage it will not be possible to harvest much over 11,00,000 bales. Buying in Manchester still continues for this market, and most operators are contented that prices will not come down, though here and there it has been possible to pick up parcels at previous rates. Transactions on fairly free scale are reported from New York for China; firus here having settled fully 25,000 hales it is just dis- i covered that Tientsin has been doing a big busi- ness direct, which possibly may account for the comparatively stiff prices quoted for certain | makes. It is estimated that over 100,000 bales have been booked for China during the last month. The market is strong for yarns, both imported and local. Fancy prices have been paid for the small parcels of new crop that have come to hand, for sample purposes it is said.
