SILK.
Messrs. A. R. Burkill & Sons, in their Silk Cir- cular dated Shanghai, 22nd July, state:-The home markets are quiet. Gold Kiling is quoted in London at 12/-. Raw Silk.--A considerable business has been effected this week in Teatlees whilst Coarse Silks have received some attention. The market in the interior continues to advance. Yellow Silk.-A general demand has forced up prices further. Mienchews, Mienyangs, Wong- chows, etc., are most wanted. Hand Filatures.-- Scarcely any business. Prices asked much above home prices. Steam Filatures.--A large lot of common market chops (old cargo) have been taken for New York and in New Season Silk only one or two transactions have taken place. Wild Silk.- Business has been done in Raws to a considerable extent and there is some enquiry for Tussah Fila- ture for America. Waste Silk.-The home mar- kata continue dull and depressed and offers are much below prices demanded by dealers. Some business is reported in new season's wastes com. prising Kading Frisonets 70.20.10 at Tls, 35. Ilankow Frisonets (whole hales) Tls. 331, but it is difficult to ascertain whether these purchases are on compradoro's a/c., or on exporter's afc. dom from second hands. As mentioned above the Manchester market is firm, as well it might be with the very unreserved way in which orders have been placed for China. At the moment India is not buying and some think prices are therefore likely to go lower. Most of the markers of cloths, however, are pretty fully engaged for the next nine months, so there would appear to be no necessity for manufacturers to lower their prices, unless Cotton futures warrant it. Spot Cotton is quoted 6. 36d. for Mid American and 7d. for Egyptian in Liverpool, but we are told private advices make the former much lower. There has been some further buying in New York for this market for arrival in the Fall, but for later shipment prices wanted do not compare favourably with Manchester.

Shanghai, 28th July.
Mesars. Noel, Murray & Co.. in their Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, statë: The most interesting and important news this week is undoubtedly that of the occupation of Newchwang by the Japanese troops. It appears to have been done with the minimum of fuss and inconvenience to the foreign residents there, who were able, with the prompt assistance of a few of the Japanese troops, to prevent any attempt at lawlessness by the rowdy element during the short interregnum. There appears to have been some confusion at first as to who should assume the jurisdiction, but it has been apparently decid. ed to leave it in the hands of the Japanese for the present. A good many people seemed to expect
he
that so soon as the Russians left there would immediately be a boom in the trade and the natives would be eager to send up free shipments. Some little delay, however, appears inevitable, and although the dealers here were preparing to HONGKONG, 29th July. The prices ruling are ahip, telegrams were received with instructions to as follows:--
desist for the present. Ship owners, owing to the COTTON YARN—
recent stoppage and capture of steamers by the Japanese, for some reason not yet made quite clear, are not particularly anxious to despatch boats, hut doubtless after the fall of Port Arthur, which is looked upon as a foregone conclusion in the next few days, the restrictions now imposed will very much relaxed. Meanwhile importers here have had lots to occupy their time and attention, and the week has indeed been a very busy one in most import offices. The spirit of forward buying is still on the Native dealers and contracts have gone through on a very free scale. The eager demand has naturally kept the Man- chester market firm, hut nevertheless business has been done, notwithstanding some orders could not be filled before next March or April shipment. The transactions again embrace a wide range of Cotton goods of all descriptions, and judging by the very liberal clearances now going on the market will be quite ready to receive them all. From stock, too, some fairly free buying has been indulged in, chiefly in 8-4 lbs. Grey Shirt- ings and White Shirtings, the unsold supply of the former being very much reduced. Of American makes the unsold stock much be exceedingly small, and clearances during the past two weeks or so have been on quite a magnificent scale. The Tientsin merchants have bought with some free-
