THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

21

Mesars. Noel, Murray & Co. of Shanghai, in their report dated 14th July, state-If it is'nt one thing its another, but whichever it is this market always seems to get it in the neck! With lower and weaker exchange and higher Cotton the ordinary calculating individual would expect to see a firmer market. "Can any one say it is so this week? On the contrary, it is back in the doldrums again, and the dealers seem to be more inclined to be influenced by the “what may be rather than the "what is.' Holders of stocks, under the circumstances, are not enjoying a happy time; for while knowing they cannot be replaced, even at the nominally current prices, within a reasonable period, there is before them always this bogey of much cheaper supplies on order, on which, although it is for somewhat remote delivery, the native is inclined to lay his offers. Holders of American goods have taken the bull

Soon as these present disturbing influences are removed, and possibly with much more vigour. | As regards the rest of the compaign no news of a definite or reliable nature has come to hand here for a considerable time now. Advices from Manchester report the market there as rather quieter, business being curtailed owing to the rise in spot Cotton, but forward orders are being met with some freedom, and though of a somewhat speculative nature seem justified to a great extent. As a rule the dealers here decline to be interested. Cotton, as we anticipated, has suddenly reacted, being quoted on the 9th inst. 6.36d, and yesterday 6.54d. while private telegrams to-day make it 6.64d. for Mid-American, which is a fluctuation of 68 points in two week! For De cember it is still 5d. The quotation for Egypt ian has advanced to 7d. Shipments `so far con- tinue very light. The American market is a little firmer, manufacturers, having evidently disposed of their available stocks, are not so willing to en- ter into further contracts at the close, but a fair quantity of replacing purchases have been made during the interval. The rise in sterling and Cotton has had an invigorating effect on the In- dian Yarn market, and quite a refreshingly large business has gone through at advancing prices. At the close there is a stronger feeling for local spinnings. Stocks.-Owing to the dilatoriness on the part of some of the import houses in sending in their papers the returns are not ready for this Mail, but will be published in our next.

N.B. Since writing the above we learn that fresh orders have just come in from Newchwang nstructing shipments to be made, and under- stand two or more steamers are being despatched as promptly as possible.

Early in the interval buyers for Newchwang were again fairly active, supplementing the rather free supplies sent up last week. However, a few days ago orders were received suspending shipments for the present, and freight engagements have in consequence been cancelled. It appears the Japanese forces are closing in on the place, and judging by the sounds of firing, said to be heard there in the distance, some heavy fighting was going on.
