Walker, who is out of practice, and H. Hancock coming in at the last moment for J. Hooper (who was indisposed) and doing very creditably The feature of the match was Bonnar's excellent bowling, for he scored over 200 on all four alleys. NEW JAPANESE EXPLOSIVE. As is probably well known, the explosive used in the Japanese Navy bears the name of its in- ventor, Dr. Shimose. The destructive power of this explosive was demonstrated during the re- cent naval engagements. Two weeks ago, the inventor, Dr. Shimose, delivered a lecture in Tokyo, in which he explained the nature and use of the powder. We are indebted for the following report to the Japan Times:

A rumour becamo current in the Colony yesterday of foul play having attended the death of Dr. James B. Menzies (47) ship's doctor of the Glenturret, whose dead body was found at the corner of Carnarvon and Robinson Roads, Kowloon, on Saturday night. The report supplied by the police is that death was due to an apoplectic fit.
On Thursday forenoon Blake Pier was the scene of great bustle on account of the large num- ber of departures for England and Canada by the German mail Preussen and the Empress of China. As will be seen from the passenger lists appearing elsewhere, the number of those departing from Hongkong
was abnormal for one day. These included more than a few Government servants
with their wives, and several well-known ladies and gentlemen in the Colony. Both steamers were followed out of the Harbour by launches blowing their steam-whistles and firing off crackers in time-honoured fashion to speed the parting friend.
Dr. and Mrs. Fr. Krüger entertained a representative party of 240 persons to a soirée, at Club Germania on the 25th ult. the company being introduced to the German Admiral and officers.
