Coronet Rose got the best of a good start and jumped off in front, followed by Royal and Dis- Hume covery, with the rest of the field following in Suppé the order Chieftain, Regret, and Snark. Dis- Sullivan covery pulled up when the field was approaching Rosas Wongneicheong Village, with Chieftain in elcse pursuit. Discovery rode wide when entering the band coming into the straight, and Royal gained the inside position next the leader, with Chieftain challenging. On the run to the winning-post Coronet Rose maintained the advantage, Mr. Cox bringing his mount home in rattling style with about two lengths to spare. Royal kept in front of Chieftain and secured second honours by half a length. Dis- covery a good fourth.

The Flyaway Stakes, the first race, brought out a field of six. Coronet Rose was generally favoured in consequence of his fine performance in the Derby on the previous day, and he justified his hackers' support by winning easily from Royal. In the Exchange Plate race nine

Rose horses faced the starter. None of the entrants showed up, and the race fell to Set, from the Ewo stables, with Algerine second and Rebel King third, In view, of the Jockey Club's decision with regard to the relative merits of China-pony, and waler racing, it was a notable fact that more interest was shown by the spectators in the waler race for the Professional Cup than in any of the native-pony events. There is no doubt that apart from the argument that the keeping and training of walors means an expense which the average member of the Jockey Club does not feel justified to take upon him, the waler races are vastly more appreciated by those whose only outlay amounts to the admission money at the gate. The Professional Cup race was productive of the best finish of the day. Six entered. Remnant (who had won the Foochow Cup on Tuesday) was penalised to the extent of 7lbs., but even with this extra weight to carry there were many who fancied that, with Mr. Master up, Remnant stood a good chance of defeating Runaway Girl, who had made such a good show for first honours. As it turned out, however, Remnant got the worst of the start, and was never able to come up to Runaway Girl, who held the lead from first to last. Dandy also made a good bid for first honours, but his challenge was staved off by Runaway Girl,

Cup race numbers were put up. Manila was fancied for a win, bat Fiscal secured premier honours with Standard second, while Ben Roy (Mr. Johnstone up), who made the running throughout, finished sixth. Only two horses came forward for the Garrison Cup-Coronet Rose and Royal. As their respective form had already been demonstrated in the Flyaway Stakes backers did not hesitate to bet on the former. Coronet Rose won an easy race by a length and a half. The Jockey Cup drew out a field of eleven, Ca Canny started a hot favourite. The result was Hever in doubt. the field over the entire Ca Canny led

taking second honours. Eight horses turned out for the Challenge Cap. A graud race for which Rajah set the pace resulted in his stable com- panion Polka getting home first with very little to spare from Rebel King and Pandur. This race was run at a rattling pace. With 21 starters to compete against, Mr. Johnstone had difficulty in pulling Ca Canny through the throng. He contrived to do so, however, and getting on the rail coming into the straight he made the pace hot. Maréchal Niel Rose was sent in pursuit followed by Tai Yat, and after a fine run home Mr. Buzey's horse passed the post first leading by half a head; Tai Yat a good third.

SECOND DAY, 24th FEBRUARY. Glorious weather greeted the second day of the Hongkong Jockey Club's race meeting. A goodly gathering attended, more amount of money, perhaps, changing hands than on the previous day. The previous day's racing having shown up the comparative merits of the various horses, plunging, especially by the numerous Chinese spectators, was common. The more certainty of the favourites' success, however, prevented extraordinary dividends.

Mr.

19

France Rose beat Chieftain, who was more heavily backed. Rex secured third place. The biggest field of the day was the Racing Stakes, over a score of horses facing the starter. Dis- closure was a popular win, Standard being recond, and Arranapogue third. A good divi- dend was paid on the latter.

A splendid start. Passing the stand for the first time The Crow led, with La France Rose second, Algerine third, Northern Rose fourth, and the rest in a bunch. Towards the bend La France Rose drew ahead, closely followed by The Crow, who continued for some time neck and neck. Approaching the Football Club's pavi lion La France Rose hauled ahead slightly, taking, however, an outside course. La France Rose continued to gain going up hill, The Crow going well at his heels, Northern Rose next At the Black Rock all were more or less to- gether, La France Rose with a slight lead. Algerine made an excellent spurt nearing the Village; he was followed by Set. also doing well. In the straight Set, Algerine, and Rebel King took a lead, La France Rose and The Crow falling behind. They finished in this order.

In the course of the afternoon the Racecourse became crowded with spectators. Among the throng were all the best known people in the Colony. It was pleasurable to notice that the promenade in front of the Grand Stand had been watered in the morning, thus putting an end to the clouds of distressing dust that had been so prevalent on the opening day. Again at tiffin-time the watering-buckets were put into use, and there was an entire absence of the annoy- anos that had made Tuesday's races so uncomfort | Mr. F. B. Runaway Girl secured inside position, followed closely by Chi Sai, Golden Bell, Dandy, Brilliant, and Remnant in the order named. In this position they passed the post for the first time. In approaching the Football Club pavilion Chi Sai was challenged for second place by Golden Bell, and they rode neck and neck until going up the hill to the Black Rock without either assuming the lead. Meanwhile Mr. Master sent. Remnant forward at a rattling pace and came up into the bunch.
