MISCELLANEOUS IMPORTS. SHANGHAL-1st October (From Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. Piece Goods Trade Report.) Since the issue of our last dircular on the 21th ult, there has been little business done from first hands, but in some quarters there is a feeling that there is rather more movement in the market. This is noticeable in the clearances of American Sheetings, which have nearly all been taken by the Chefoo merchants, nd it is pleasing to note that nearly all of the gods recently sold at public auction have gone into consumption in this direction. We have also heard that some orders have been received from Tientsin, but about this we have our doubts, as even with actual basires before them merchants are quite helpless to deal in any quantities owing to the extreme tightness of money in the Native market. The pressure has become 'so acute that even retail dealers are finding difficulty in doing anything beyond the most meagre quantities. The favorable news from Hankow mentioned was evidently genuine as we hear the dealers have been fairly busy, and that a fair quantity, chiefly from second hands, has been arranged for shipment hence.
We also hear that the Szechuen market is rather better, but we have been unable to obtain particu- lars of what has been done but we believe the business is composed chiefly of Indian Yarn and Heavy Shirtings. We have been told several in- dents have been placed for Grey Shirtings, Fine White Shirtings and Dyed Goods for spring arrival, and we further hear that the hopeless rates of exchange for forward delivery have com- pletely spoiled many chances of doing business.
The Manchester market is quoted steady, but we have been told that for near shipment lower pri- ces might be accepted Cotton in Liverpool is now quoted 6.02d, as against 6.40d. a week ago. We have not heard of anything being done in New York.
