Newchwang.-Messrs. Bandine & Co.'s report of 27th July, says :-The export of grain to foreign countries on and after 22nd Ju'y was prohibited by notice issued on 15th instant. An active demand for tonnage ensued; several steamers were settled at 16 sen, some at 18 sen, one at 23 sen, to carry wheat and other grain to Kobe. Beans, cakes and oil are not touched by this pro- hibition, and recent rains have swelled the river to such an extent that over 300,000 piculs of beans have arrived in port. Besides this, about one million piculs are on

the way

down by river, and prices are consequently deolining. We quote-Beans per 3 piculs, Tls. 7.48; Bean Bean Oil, per picul, Cakes per 10 pieces, Tla. 9.60; Tls. 7.40. There is again some demand for tonnage, and settlements have been made at 15 to 16 sen to different Japanese ports. prepared new wharves and godowns, and have made the necessary arrangements with the Custom House to discharge steamers alongside and store the cargo, not only from Chinese ports but also from Hongkong, Japan, etc.

SHANGHAI, August 21st (from Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report):-Our market remains in the same dull and lifeless con- dition, and the week under review has been almost a blank. A few sales are reported to have been made, but they appear tobe more or less of a forced nature as the Natives appear to have only been tempted to speculate by the low prices quoted, which practically gave them the full bene- fit of cheap purchases and the improved rate of exchange. During the past few days it is quite possible that more business might have been done, but for the fact that the Banks were quoting forward rates from id. to jd. per month down, which rendered business practically impossible except for cash, which the dealers are not able to arrange for with the Native Banks.
