The Singapore Football Challenge Cup was wou on the 10th inst. by the Singapore Cricket Club, who defeated the Fort Canning Recreation Club in the final by two goals to wil.
The following notes are from the Feochow Echo of the 11th inst:-H.E the Tartar General, who is also for the time being Acting Viceroy of the province. returned the official call of H.B.M. Consul. Mr. H. F. Brady, yesterday morning. The typhoon passing up the coast has given us another week of dull cloudy skies and a cool temperature, which in view of the certainty of plenty of sunshine aud oppressive beat in the hear fature has been much appreciat ed. The lers said about the accompanying damp the better. The injury due to the growing paddy by the late flords is said to be less than was at one time thought to be the case by the farmers, though still considerable. The harvest ing in the plain under Kishan is to commence next week, weather permitting,

The Novoye Fremya gets hold of some very curions information at times writes the Kobr Chronicle. The latest "scoop" is in regard to Jaran. According to a Berlu telegram to the Deutsche Japan-post, the Russian journal has information from Japan that in view of the friendly relations entertained by Japan te wards | all the Powers, and in spite of the war rumours circulated by the English Press, the building of new men-of-war will ho take place, and the Lund-tax will not be percused. While it is true that the Land-taxis bot to be increased. | it is not true that Japan has abandoned the Naval Extension scheme of the contrary the orders for additional vessels have already been placed. It would be interesting to know from what quarter in Japan the Noroy. Vremya's information emanated.

SHANGHAL. 17th July, (from Messrs. Noël, the close of our last circular a fair business Murray & Co's. Piece (loods Trade Report ).-- After
was dono chiefly in Whites and Faneich for ship- ment during the later autumn months on private torms, but during this week the demni bas gradually become less and less and the market closes very dull. To the tightness of the native money market is attributed the main cause of this stagnation and such stringency recurring as it has done so frequently of iate, is to be regvettel, as it cannot but eventually cripple the trading facilities of all concerned in the business, as high interest means enhanced pricns which in turn tends to curtail consumption. Clearances show a falling off as is only natural at this time of the year, but besides this merchants are unaldo to gst the usual facilities from the Native Banks. There is very little doing for either Tientsin or Newchwang, hut here again the tightness of money stops business as it is reported [that there are actual orders in the hands of denlers here who do not cure to buy under the pr. sent circumstances and who for want of funds are unable to offect clearances. The Up-River Markets aro again euffering from the effects of floods, which although not so bad at those of 1901, are likely to cau v much damage to the growing crops. We hear, however, that the Szechuen markot is good especially for Indian spinnings and iu some quarters it is said | that as much as teu taels por bale profit is being If such be the casò it is to be hoped that inade. a good business will ensue as soon as navigation is again practicable. Ningpo is rather quieter, the good purchases recently mind having apprently supplied what was wanted for the time being. The Manchester Cotton market is easier.
