Reference has frontly been made to a Russian Company which has acquired a CON- cession to exploit certain forests on the Yalu river. The concession was granted by Coren in 1896, but the concessionaires have only rece ly commenced work on a large se lo apparently. We learn that the Company, which is called the Russian Forest Ludustry Co., hs a cipital of three million roubles. Several thousands of workmen are said to have been engaged in in Manchuris fo employment in the Yalu forests, the Russian staff being mostly recruited from the officials of the Eastern Chinese Rail. way. The Company owns a few slowers and is arranging, we understand, to open an agency

With reference to the telegram in the Ostasiatische Lloyd, announcing the establish- ment of a new bank in Berlin with branches in
Hongkong and Calcutta, we have made enquiries in the lest info med German b..nking circles in is extremely improbable. During the past three the Colony and are led to understand tha' the story
or four years umours about the starting of a new Fr Ensteru bank with headquarters at Berlin have been ugain and again bruited abroad, but nothing practical has over com out of them. If an Oriental bank were about to be establish ed it is considered unlikely that. Hongkonganl Calcutta would be selected for the branches : Hon kong and Shanghai would be the more natural centres for a China ban
society.
