L.E.C. v. H.K.C.C.
This annual match was played on the ground of the H.K.U.C. on the 11th inst. The wea- ther was fine aud, from a spectator's point of view, pleasant and cool, but a strongish wind somewhat inte f red with the play and probably on this account the form shown was hardly up to the average, As is usual in these encounters the Ladies had the first choice of players to represent them-that is, of course, of men who are members of both Clubs in spite of this fact, however, the C.C. generally manages to win. Saturday's match was an exception to the rule and, after a close and even contest the L.RC won by 10 games-87 to 77. As a matter of fact the C.C. won the larger number of sets, securing 10 against their opponents 8. The L.R.C. were unfortunate 300 yards in losing the services of Pinckney who was Mrs. Marshall nominated J. Marshall 33 unable to play through illness, but this Mts. Power
Cel-Serg. Cross 33 unfortunate circumstance doubtless tended to Mrs Stewart. TM Stewart ..... 31 reader the match more even as the C.C. were M Lapsley 31 less strongly represented than usual. Of the 30 various couples, Arkinson and Grist, for the 31 L.R.C. and Humphreys and Rademacher, for the .C. were the most successful, each pair losing 29 but one set, but Atkinson and Grist won the most games-35 out of a possible 36, whereas Humphreys and Rademacher were 3 short of this total. There was quite a large number of spectatore, including many ladies, who followed the play with interest, if without enthusiasm. Messrs. Balloch, Grimble, Nicolle, and Woodcock efficiently carried out the duties of umpires and the .C. Secretary was much in evidence in attending to the scoring boards. By the kindness of the Colonel and Officers, the band of the 10th Bombay Infantry played an excellent selection of pieces and thereby added

THE STOCK OF CURRENCY IN HONGKONG.
In Messrs. Ilbert & Co.'s (Shanghai) Market Report of the 4th inst., we find the following remarks on Mr. Taylor's annual report for 1902:-
The Customs Annual Report for 1902 is published, from which it will be seen that imports at moment of landing have increased by Tls. 63,000,000 and export at moment of shipment by Tls. 49,0,0,000, which hardly bears out the theory that depreciated silver is stimulating exports and curtailing imports. The figures regarding silver are interesting, as the net export for the year is stated to be close on Tls. 14,000,000. The Statistical Secretary for the first time draws a distinction between the export of syete and of coined silver, and states that the great bulk of the exort consisted of dollars which were shipped to Hongkong; that it is certain that these dollars were not sent abroad from Hongkong, and that they are destined to filter back to the mainland, If this is the case the stock of currency must be very much more plentiful in Hongkong then it is in any of the Treaty ports; both bere and in the North, syoea is getting rather scarce. Customs statistics are valuable mainly for par poses of comparison; we have seen that there has been a large net export of silver last year as against a considerable net import in former years; it is not stated why it is expected that more silver will filter back from Hongkong in the future then in the past, nor is there any means of estimating what quantity of silver filters into or filters out of China.
