ARRIVALS OF MAILS.
The U.S. mail of the 19th March arrived. per O. & O. steamer Coptic, on the 15th April (27 days; the German mail of the 17th March arrived, per N.D.L. st amor Bayern, on the 15th April (29 days); and the French mail of the 20th March arrived, par M.M. steamer Caledonien, on the 19th Ap÷il (30 days).

The number of plague crses in the Colony 277 from January 1st to date is returned at 254. 2:30

DEATHS.

The Union Insurance Society of Canton, Ld... has declared an interim bonus of 20 per ceuf, upon contributions for the year 1902.
During the last quarter of 1902, the silver export from Canton amounted to 3.279.261 Hk. Tls.; the import was 486,587 Hk. Tls.
Mr. B. Brotherton Harker, architect, civil engineer, and surveyor, of Queen's Road Central, has been elected an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers of London.

The visitors to the City Hall Library and Museum for the week ended 11th April were 252 non-Chinese and 70 Chinese to the former, and 4 non-Chinese and 2,82 Chinese to the latter institution.
Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company have teen occupying the Theatre Royal during the week. The Geisha, The Belle of New York and La Mascotte have been performed before crowded and bighly appreciative audiences.
The Chinaman who is accused of complicity in the murder of Yeung Ku Wan, the sobrol- master, at 5, Gage Street on 11th Ja uary, 1941, was again brought up at the Magistracy on the 15th inst. and remanded formally for
nother week.
Inspector Cuthbert, "of the defective depart- ment of the Colony's police force, left for Scotland on the 1th inst. by the English mail on nine months' leave. He is accompanied by his wife and child. Many friends boarded the liner to wish the party bon voyage.
It is notified in the Gazette that Mr. High deputed by His Excellency the Gover Council to act on behalf of the Building Authority in all cases referred to in sections 207 of Ordinance No. 1 of 1903 in connect with dangerous buildings.

At a meeting of the Justices of the Peace at the Magistracy on the 15th inst. L. Comar was granted an adjunct licence to sell and retail intoxicating liquor at No. 61, Des Voeux Road Central. The Justices present were :—Messrs. F. A. Hazeland (Chairman), J. H. Kemp, C. D. Melbourne, A. Seth, and Capt. F. W. Lyons. Mr. E. J. Grist of Messrs, Wilkinson and Grist, solicitors) appeared for the applicant.
On the 10th inst,, by the P. & O. steamer Coromandel, Mr. E. K. Belilios, C.M.G., took his departure for Shanghai. From thence be will proceeded to Dalay, and there take the train for Europe. Mr. Balillos is one of the first to make the trip home via Eieria from this port since the Siberian Railway was opened along its entire route. We understand that Mr. Belilios will probably reside in England for some years.
Formal notification is now made of the dissolution of the partnership formerly existing between Messrs. Dorabjes Nowrojes, I. P. Madar and William Farmer in connection with the New Victoria and King Edward Hotels, Hotgkong, and the Victoria Hotel, Shameen. Mr. Farmer, as from the beginning of the year, fakes over the Shameen Hotel, while the other two partners take over the Hongkong establishments...
On the 10th inst. a trio of ricksha coolies came into èollision in Des Vonx Road ontside the Hongkong Hotel. Two allied themselves aaiust the third, and during the fight he received a kick or a blow on the spleen which caused rupture of that organ. He sank dow in the street, and oxpired very soon afterwards. The police were called, but the assailante es- caped and, are still at large. The police, how- over, are in possession of their names, and unless they have gained Chinese territory their capture should not be long delayed.
The blank walls of certain houses near the top of Mosque Street have been secured as an advertisement hoarding by a well known local firm of wine and spirit merchants, whose name appears in letters of such magnitude that they cannot fail to strike the eye of anyone looking at the City from the Harbour or Kowloon. The effectiveness of the advertise ment is unquestionable, but it does not lend any beauty to the view. How long will it be | till "X- ~'s Pills" flaunt their remedia!
