SHIELD TIE-V.R.c. 78TH CO, P.GA. In fine weather, and before a goed tnru-out of spectators, these two teanis met on the 7th inst to play their postponed tie in th· first round of the Shield Competition. The s des were :--

Losing the toss, the V.R.C, kieked with the sun in their faces. They assumed the aggressive at the ontsot, and secured a + corner, which was left animproved. For quite five minu es they kept their opponents on the defensive, and when the RA's did get away they were quickly pulled up for offside. Foul throws were frequent, both sides offending in this respect. The first incident worthy of note was a hard ground shot from Herton, which Spindley kicked clear. Alit.le later Sayer strack one of the uprights with a good try from the wing, The K.A.custodian, frho was kept on his mettle, played a sterling game, clearing some dingerens shots that but for his carefuluess would have opened the scoring in favour of the V.R.C. The latter kept their ground pretty well clear, but a breakaway on the R.A.'s left followed by a corner on their right, put Fittock on the qui vive. Herton followed Holmes in an attempt to relieve, and succeeded in binging the playes to the other end of the field, where he outwitted the backs, and following up his owu pass, recaptured the ball and found the inside of the ne, the effort being deservedly applauded. The R.A. got a foul in V.R C. ground rear the centre-mark, bat gained nothin by the fr. e kick and their opponents again cluster d in accom fortable proximity to Spindley, whose anxiety was allayed by the the bill eventually going over the bar from Sayer's fool. The V.R.C. were again invading when the interval arrived, the score then standing:-

! goal, where he was blocked by and lost the, leather to Byle. Spindley 1ext spoilt cleverly a combined rush by Seth, Humphreys, and Herton, this being one of the occasions when the V.R.C. did not leave all the work to one man. A little later a swift ball from Horton cut the corner of the cross-bar, and from the goal-kick | the R.A. made a spurt which also ended abortively, in this case one of the uprights bein struck. The R.4. were a poor lot, taking them all through, and with a less capable goalkeeper won'd have sustained a more crashing defeat | than that represented iu the result. 1 must be admitted, however, that they bad hard luck in not scoring just on time, Fittock having to fist out an accurately placed hot from the left wing.

On the run to the Cast Rocks Buoy Bon'to drew away from Colren and looked like passing Kathleen, when again the wind shifted, this time to abou; north-west, and the Kathleen being the more westerly of the two boats recovered Ler lead. On the ruu, Erico passed Colleen, who about this time was very badly served by the wind and was left a long way astern by the other three. Returning round Channel Rocks to the mark boat the three leading boats kept their relative positions, thongh is

CHAMPIONSHİP.

The tart for the Championship class was made at 1.3p.m, the competing beats being the Fern n, Dioue, and Alannah. The wind which was very light from the eastward_suddely dropped at the start and somewhat upset calculations. The Dione cros ed the line tiist, leaving tho Vernon badly hung for a minute or two. Both these boats got off on the starboard tack and stood towards the Northern shore and getting out of the strength of the string flood vide made fair progress for the Channel Rocks, which were rounded by the Dione a few mint s ahead of Vernon, Alannah getting hopelessly becalmed in the harbour withdrew from the contest. Immediately after rounding the rocks Dione went about on the port tack, which mazœuvre allowed the Vernon, who st od further on the starboard fack, to

gain considerably, but she again lost this advantage by raouing into a calm, which the Dione managed to escape, and the latter maintained a considerable lead round the Quarry Bay mark-boat and spinnakers were set to port for the run to the Cust Rock Buoy. Before this mark was reached almest a flat calm was encountered, and it became apparent that what erer wild there was ahead was from the west- ward. The Dione round d the buoy almost becalmed But considerably ahead, and shortly afterwards picking up a light westwardly wind set her spinnaker for a ruu back to the Chas nel rocks. By the time the Fernon reached the buoy the west wind bad established itself, and setting her spinnaker she soon r.n up on the Dione, keeping well towards the north shore where she cheated the tide and getting a south-east wind off the Dock paint quickly showed ber heels to her oppment, who got badly blanketed by junks and being almost be calmed could scarcely stem the tide. The Vernon rounded the Channel rocks on the 2nd round 7 minutes ahead of the Done and made the Quarry Bay' mark- boat in one tack. The Dione having to make a board again lost ground, and just before reaching the mark fell in for a strong west wind against which the Vernon was beating homeward. Showing fine form Vernon eventually finished about 15 minutes ahead of the Dione.

SECOND CL'88.

By the time the second class started the wind- dear the line had fallen very light and the leading boat had barely got to Blackheads when the One-Design Class boats were rounding Channel Rocks. In consequence of this loss of time shortly after the start and of the wind falling just as the Maid Marion neared the finishing line the race was rot finished within the time limit and will have to be resail d.

The cfficial times are as follows :-
