HONGKONG, 2nd January, 1903-Business during the past week has beeu interfered wih by the New Year holidays, and only a transactions have to be recorded.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais continue firm with sales at 86624 and $663, and further buyers at the la ter rate. The latest London quotation is £63. 10s. Nationals are unchanged at $26 sellers,

MARINE INSURANCE?.- Unions continue in request at $460. China Traders are offering at *58 sellers. Cantons are unchanged at 8167. but with a hardening tendency. Other stocks under this head are unaltered and without business.

FIRE INSURANCE3.-Hongkongs are tum. bled to $335 se lers, and shares could probably be obtainel at $330. Chinas, after a forced sale at $83, are firmer again with sales and further buyers at $84.

SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have improved to $36 buyers, after fair sales at at this rate and $35. Indo-Chinas are quiet at $86 with probable sellers. China Manilas have been booked at the reduced rate of $24. Duglases are firm r with buyers at $42. Star Ferries are firmer and can now be placed at $234 (old) and $134 (new). Shell Transports are weak at £1. 78. 6d.

REFINERIES.-China Sugars have improved to $89 cash Luyers, and sales at $90 for the settlement delivery. Luzons are neglected at $12 sellers.

MINING.-Punjoms are weak with sellers at $21. Raubs have sold at $6; and can now be placed at $7. Other stooks are unchanged.

DOCKS, WHARVES & GODOWNS.-Hongkong & Whampoa Docks sold during the early part of the week at $210 and $212) but have sincs weakened and shares are now offering at the higher rate Hongkong aud Kowloon Wharves have been disposed of at $88 and $88) and close steady at the former quotation New Amoy Docks are unchanged.

COTTON MILLS.-Hongkong Cottons are easier with some sellers at $17. The Northern stocks are unchanged.

Shanghai 21th December (from Messrs. J. P. Bisset & Co.'s Report). A considerable business has been done during the week, the market being very irregular owing, in a large measure, to the clearing up for the large settlement on the 29th and 30th. Profits on short sales have been eagerly taken as advances on shares are steadily refused by the Banks. BANKS.-Hongkong and Shang. hai Banks have improved slightly locally, business having been done at $660 ex 711 and at clearing at $662) ex 71). National sales at $27. MARINE INSURANCES.-The only business quoted in these is in North Chinas at Tla. 180. Union are wanted at $460. Traders off ring at $58. FIRE IN- SURANCE. No niness reported. SHIPPING.- Indo-Chinas. A c-nsider.ble business has been done during the week at Tls. 61 and Tls. 614 for settlement and Tls. 63) and Tls, 64 and Tis, 644 for March delivery. Shares are to-day wanted at Tla. 61). SUGARS.—Chinas are wanted at $85. MIN- ING.-Chinese Engineering and Mining Co.'s shares have changed hands for the settlement at Tls. 8.10 and Tls, 8 and Tls. 8.20. Shares are enquired for forward delivery. Raubs are wanted at $6 and Punjoms at 82}. Docks, WHARVES AND GODOWNS. -S: C. Farnham, Boyd's shares fell to Tls. 180, at which rate a considerable number of shares changed hands. Rates subs quently steadied a little and shares change I hands at 'l'ls. 1824 and Tls. 185 for settlement an 178 ex dividend of Tls. 7 just paid and Tls 18 fr April. HONGKONG, 2nd January.-There is no improve- ment to report in any direction. From Saigon to Hongkong, 8 cents per picul last; to Philip- pines and Java, no demand; to one port Japan, 26 cents per picul has been paid for January, 33 cents for February and 36 cents per picul for March loading From north coast Java to Hong- kong, 17 cents per picul last (dry sugar). Coal freights have further declined. From Moji to Hongkong, $2; to Singapore, $2.05 last and $2.70 offering; to Manila, $3.50 per ton last. following are th settlements":-
