The ppulation of Nagaraki and the num ber of dwellings in which the inhabitants are housed, have grown remarkably in the last five years. According to the most recent census in the 1896 the population numbered 71,730, and the houses 9,590. At the end of last year, Lowever, these figures bad grown respectively to 142.811 and 19,97. A similar increase is noted in regard to agasaki prefecture as a whole. In 1897 it held 845 689 people, living in 154.704 houses. Now these figures have swelled to 970,491 and 167,518.

We have received the Foochow Echo of the 13th inst.:-By the death on the 11th of M-. W. P. Galton, aged 64, Foochow lost one of its old landmarks.-Dandy Dick as successfully performed by the F. A.
