One of the most prominent features of the adjuncts to the Osaka Exhibition will be a reli- gious festival, involving the assembly of ten thousand Fuddhist priests at Tennoji Temple to commemorate the thirteen-hundredth anni. versary of the death of Prince Shotoka. This will be only the second time that such a ceremony has been held in Japan; the first being celebrated at Nara, twelve centuries ago, when Empress Koken inaugurated the famous Daibutsu, the great image of gilt bronze. When its construc tion was completed, the Empress invited ten thousand Buddhist priests to perform a grand, solemn religious service to commemorate the occasion. Already over twenty thousand priests from all parts of Japan have sent in their names to join the coming festival

Notice was at once given to the Police Station, and several police consia. bles, and doctors repaired quickly to the place, The man had apparently taken poison, and antidotes were therefore administered, with the res it that he was resuscitated; but he succumbed very soon afterwards. It is stated the nufortuna'e man had been seen about Kyoto for thre or four days, but nothing has been ascertained as to the hotel at which he stayed. No money was found upon him, but there were a number of papers in his possession, mostly in Russian, one paper bearing the name of Mr. Robert Yourg. DAMASK8-

Mr P. Eduljee says in his report, dated Hong- kong. 19th Lecember-Demand from the country still holds off and the prospects of an improvement in the interior before China New Year are very remote. With the exception of the small wants of the city, business during the first portion of the interval had been insignificant, and exchange continued to recede the market almost came to a standstill. The anxiety of some large

as

porters to quit, however, could not withstand the unusual inactivity any longer, and anticipat- ing a reaction in exchange, a concession of 50 cents to a dollar per hale was submitted to, with the result that close upon 6,000 bales have changed hands subs quently as particularised at foot. The enquiry was at first chiefly confined to No. 10s., but No. 208. soon attracted the attention of dealers by the r scarcity, and sales of favourite superior tickets have been effected at a small advance. With small receipts and comparatively larger offtakes, our estimate of stocks shows a small decrease on lat figures and the market close dull and declining in sympathy with lower advances from Bombay,

Local Manufacture:-The firmness of the local mill has more or less checked business, but a fair demand has been experienced and sales of 300 bales No. 108. at $97 and 125 bales No. 128. at $901 have been effe-ted.

Japanese Yarn :-Quotations are maintained, and sales of 451 bales Settsu No. 208, at ~.25] to $126 are reported. Delivery four to six w eks.

Raw Cotton:-In Indian descriptions there is a coutinued absence of demand from Japan which, with her stocks and the direct shipments of the past few months, would appear to be well supplied. Despite small arrivals the country markels are irresponsive, and the local mill is not buying Rates have declined half to one dollar per picul, at which reluction only some 50 bales Superfine Bengal at from $241 to £23) could be placed, leaving a stock of 1,700 bales on the market. A small business in China Cotton has been reported and sales of about 300 bales (small) at from $261 to | $26 are reported. Stock about 500 bales. Quota- tions are Indian $22 to $24 and China $28 to $27.
