A request by the Portuguese Minister for an extension of the Portuguese Settlement of Macao has, however, been refused point-lauk by Prince Ching, who declines to discuss the matter.

Our Shanghai corespondent telegraphed under date 29th September:-The ceremony at Tientsin railway station this morning was brief but, impressive. The following telegram from Szechnen has been received by the Rev. Dr. Hykes of Shanghai: Chengtu, 20th September. The general situation is doubtful. A large area of the country is seriously disturbed. The city excitement has abated, and the officials are on the alert. The new Viceroy has just arrived. Missionaries and their property are under protection. A later Japanese felegram froni Chengtu is more encouraging.

It is understood that the directors favour Southampton as the home terminus." The four vessels mentioned in the above telegram, which was despatched by our London correspondent on the 27th ultimo, as now building are presumably the Moldavia, Mongolia, Marmora and Macedonia, each of 10,000 tons register and 11,000 effective, h.p. At present the largest of th, P. & O. fleet is the Persia, the registared tonnage of which is 7,951. No information is obtainab'e locally as to the proposed abandonnent of London as the Company's home port. If it does e me to pass it will only be another illustration of the deterioration of the Thames under the rule of the present inept Conservancy Board. In the circumstances, the recommendations of the Royal Commission; which recently sat upon the subject and proposed a sweeping re-con- stitution of the Board, cannot be too soon carried into execution. This matter was dealt with at length in our leading article of the 3rd ultimo.
