consuls—if nuy—are willing to connive at The suggestion seems a sensible one, provided that the probity of the higher officials can be relied upon. At any rate there is more check upon them than upon their inferiors. It was hoped, at the end of the struggle between the Allies and China, that some effort would be made to arrive at an agreement about missionary matters. This hope has not been fulfilled, and all the old difficulties remain. The particular difficulty which we have been discussing is very pressing. Though it must be remem- bered that it was originally through the bad example set by some missionaries of undue interference on behalf of their con- ferts which inspired the natives with the unbappy idea of utilising the missionaries' names to further private ends, yet it is great injustice to other missionaries, as well as a serious peril to all foreigners in China, that the faults of a few should have led to an abuse which embitters international intercourse in the country and casts dis- credit on entirely undeserving meu.

THE RECORD OF H.M.8. "TEBRİBLU
After having occupied for so long enviable position of being the best ship for big- gun shooting not only on the China Station but, in the whole of His Majesty's Fleet, the Terrible has been compe led to haul down her colours before the performance of the Ocean, which has just completed her annual prize-firing and at Weihaiwei on the 10th inst, made the unprece dented record of nine bits in nine rounds with a 6-in, gun, against seven hils for nine rounds by the Terrible at Mirs Bay last month. This latter score was made by the late Petty Officer Grounds, and he had heavy odds to face in the extremely unfavourable state of the weather and the overheated condition of the cordite, which threw the shotą over the target. No particulars are given as to range in con nection with the Ocean's figures, but we are informed that the name of the man who com piled them is Gunner F. Skein, Royal Marine Artillery, and that the battleship made another record in registering 117 hits in 24mins. The flagship Glory and the Talb t have also made exceptionally high averages this year.

THE CHINESE ADDRESS.
The Chinese.community of the Colony are making extensive preparations for a grand celebration of the Coronation. Arches will be erected over some of the principal streets, and inatsheds at various points along these thoroughfares for musical and marionette performances. So great are the demands being put upon the marionette people that they have advanced their prices to four times the usual amount.

"DYNOMENE" ON FIRE IN THE HARBOUR.
Accidents to shipping in the harbour have been frequent of late, and the number · was added to on Thursday morning by a fire which broke out on the sailing vessel Dynomene whilst lying at anchor off Yaumati. The cargo con- sisted of patent briquette fuel for the Admiralty, and at half past two in the morning it was discovered that fire had broken out amongst that purt of the cargo stored in the forehold. Rockets were immediately fired to summon assistance, and these signals were observed by the officials at the Yaumati Police Station, who telephoned the news to those in charge at the Water Police Station, Tsim- shatsui. Inspector Riley went out in a launch and towed one of the floating engines down to where the Dynomene lay; on arrival he found Commander Doyes and a party of bluejackets from the Naval Yard already at work subduing the outbreak. The distress signals had been seen from the Naval Yard, and no time was lost in despatching the help asked for. When the floating engine had been placed in position and had started work, Inspector Riley pro.eeded to* Bank Wharf and embarked members of the Fire, Brigade under Mr A. Mackie, Acting Deputy Superintendent of Police, And Mr D. Macdonald, executive engineer to the brigade. Other vessels in the vicinity also sent relief parties, and the combined forces were able successfully to operate against the outbreak, which rendered dangerous by the inflammable of the burning cargo. By half-past five all danger had been averted, but previo this, as a recautionary men ne, was towed inshore and is now . sandbank on a level keel. The qui is unknown, as also in the
