China in Convulsion. By ARTHUR H. SMITH. Two volumes, with numerous illustrations, and maps. New York, Chicago, and Toronto, Fleming H. Revell Co.
AMONG the books about the present crisis which have been looked forward to by the read- ig public, none has been awaited with more anticipation of interest than that from the pen of the author of Chinese Characteristics_s and Village Life in China-for it was of course as- sumed that Dr. A. H. Smith would not let such 1,519.01 CHINA LIGHT AND POWER CO., the record of so momentous a period, in which an opportunity pass by of giving to the world

The working account shows $10,906.21 and after writing off $9,940.26 for loss of | depreciation of machinery, etc., there remains a balance of $20,846.47 to be carried forward to the debit of next year's account.
This result must not however be considered as a fair criterion of the Company's prospects, or of what the result should be of an ordinary year's working. No revenue whatever has been derived from the works at Kowloon, as owing to protracted delays which seem inevit. able with all building operations in this Colony, the works over there are only now approaching completion, and at Canton, although the record has been one of steady progress, time has necessarily been consumed in obtaining new

China. We may say at once that the hopes of necessary equipment in the matter of a book on expectant readers will not be disappointed. Excellently bound and got up by the American work, and illustrated with a most intersting publishers to whom the author entrusted his collection of photographs taken on the spot and a number of carefully prepared maps, China in Convulsion comes to us with all the extrinsic
advantages which such a book can enjoy. Of the text itself, if we offer here any criticism, it is because such a production can well stand criticism and because our readers will under- stand that its merits must amply outweigh all slight defec's.
the so-called "Borer" movement, from its first Dr. Smith deals with the whole history of
origins down its close, and considers its effects. To the siege of the Legations in author naturally devotes much space, and here Peking, where he was one of the garrison, the
we get invaluable first-hand evidence. The publishers do not claim too much for China in Convulsion when they say it will be authority on the most significant epoch in the history of the Far East.
Dr. Smith is, as we have said, essentially a fair-minded writer.. And nowhere is the quality of fair-mindedness more necessary than in a missionary in Chins, There is inevitably such a thing as a missionary bias, in a greater
