Germany has resolved definitely to pay first the private claims out of the Chinese war indemnity. The first large amounts will be turned over to those entitled to a part in Jone and December, 1902, the balance in 1903. It is impossible to fix an exact date, as a number of States have not yet notified how large their olaims are.
Admiral Ijuin, Vice-President of the Ja panese Naval Staff Department, will be ap- pointed to command the warships sent to England to be present at the Coronation of King Edward, according to the Kobe Chronicle, It is stated that his appointment to the office will be accompanied by an even more important commission. The Japanese Naval authorities find the necessity of consulting with the British Admiralty in regard to the movement of the navies both countries in time of emergency, in compliance with the terms of a confidential Note for the joint action of the two navies, annexed to the Anglo-Japanese Convention. Admiral Ijuin, it is understood, will be commis- sioned to arrange all matters concerned and will make arrangements as to the supply of coal, water, and storis, and the establishment of supply-depots to the British squadron, in order to be in readiness for operations at a moment's
notice.
