[April 13, 1901. ROYAL HONGKONG GOLF CLUB,

CAPTAIN'S CUP AND SILVER MEDAL FOR APRIL.

This was the first monthly competition for the Cup presented by Mr. Palmer, the new Cap. tain, for the year, and it is to be much regretted that incessant, raio ruined any chance of a suc- cessful inaugura ion. Out of five entries only one card was returned.

CAPTAIN'S CUP.

.90 3 87

Mr. C. M. G. Burnie There were no returns for the Pool. For the final possession of the Cup presented by Mr. E. A. Ram in 1900, play was commenced during the latter half of March. 8 of the monthly winners were present in the colony at the time and some good matches rosulted, the final being a closely contested game. The result is as given below :-

First Round. Mr. E. J. Grist (8) beat Mr. J. F. Noble (16) by 3 up and 2 to play. Mr. H. W. Robertson (10) scratched to Capt. H. B.. Des Voeux, R.E. (8). Mr. J. H. T. McMurtrie (scratch) boat Mr. T. S. Forrest (†2) by 4 up and 3 to play; and Mr. C. M. G. Burnie (3) beat Mr. E. F. Mackay (5) by a similar number.

Second Round. -Mr. E. J. Grist defeated

Capt. H. B. Des Voeux, R.E., by 3 up and 2 to play; and Mr. J. H. T. McMurtrie won easily from Mr. C. M. G. Burnie by 5 and 4.

Final Round.-A very exciting match was witnessed when Messrs. McMurtrie and Grist met in the final. The scratch man had to give his opponent 6 strokes and found it no easy task. The pair were all even at the 17th hole; and with the scratch man giving a stroke at the eighteenth the odds were distinctly in fa- vour of his opponent. But a badly hit second. by the handicap man, which found the banker, gave McMurtrie a chance and a pretty 4 secured him the victory. The game through- out was stubbornly fought and fine golf was exhibited on both sides.

The Yangtsze being at present clearer than usual, it appears that the natives give their own interpretation of the phenomenon. They say that Russia, instead of demanding the three Eastern provinces, has abandoned the demand in exchange for the Yangtsze Valley and the clearness of the water is an omen of the ap- proaching Russians. The officials are taking steps to prevent the exodus of rich people which has already begun, due to this belief, and explain to the people that the absence of the usual turbidity is due to the drought at the sources of the river far west.

To-morrow the 11th Club Race will take place over Course No. 5.

The scene in the harbour yesterday, says the N.-C. Daily News of the 5th inst., when Captain Alfred Paget gave up command of H.M.S. Astræa to assume command of the Endymion, showed how he was appreciated by his officers and men. The former rowed him off to the destroyer Otter, which was to take him to Woosung, and the latter manned the rigging and cheered lustily as the Otter passed by.
