Mr. P. Eduljes says in his Report, dated Hongkong, March 1st.--The market has not yet opened, but the bulk of sales reported below may be considered as "complimentary" for New Year settlements and are no criterion of the market.
The outlook, however, is far from encouraging and in repeating our late quotations we must mention that they are more or less unsteady and irregular. The turn that the next week or two will bring forth is looked forward to with anxiety by both importers and buyers, as on it depend in a great measure the future tone of the market and the readjustment of values.
Local Manufacture.-There is no change in local Mill quotations, which are still maintained at $90 for No: 128., and :96 for No. 16s.
Japanese Yarn.-There has been some move- ment in these threads, and sales of 50 bales No. 20s., Yellow Joss, at $108 and of 300 bales Settsu No. 20. at $109 are reported, the market closing steady.
Raw Cotton. The market has been quiet, and business continues to drag. Supplies of Indian descriptions are far in excess of requirements and our stocks are heavily augmented. The business of the interval amounts only to about 400 bales best machine-ginned Bengal at from $23 to $22į, leaving an unsold stock of about 5,500 bales, for which buyers are anxiously looked for and for which a concession of 25 to 50 cents per picul might be obtained. Quotations are:-Indian $18 to $23, Rangoon $17 to $22), and China $23 to $25.
Exchange on India has continued steady and closes to-day at Rs. 1491 for T/T and Rs. 149 for Post. On Shanghai 72} and on Yokohama at 11 per cent, discount.
The under-noted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai for the fort- night ending 25th ultimo, viz. :——
Indian. Total sales 6,109 bales, comprising 1,452 bales No. 208., 1,101 bales No. 168., 225 bales No. 128., 3,292 bales No. 108., and 36 bales No. 6s., prices showing an advance of half to one Tael and market closing strong. Estimated unsold stock about 28,000 bales.
small business has been Japanese. Only a done in these threads owing to the paucity of supplies, some 1,650 bales changing hands on the basis of Tls. 80 to 81 for No. 168., and Tls. 82 to 831 for No. 208., prices showing a slight advance of half a Tael and market closing firm.
Local---Total sales about 3,000 bales, on the basis of Tls. 68 to 721 for No. 108., Tls. 74 to 78 for No. 14s., and Tls. 78) to 79} for No. 10s.
