VERNON & SMITH'S SHARE REPORT.

HONGKONG, 15th February-The near sp proach of the Chinese New Year holidays and the consequent absence of Chinese operators has had the usual quieting effect on the market, and business during the week has been compa- ratively dull, while rates (except in Banks), where they have not actually fallen, show an inclination to decline temporarily.

BANKS Hongkong and Shanghais with a continued - demand for cash have further advanced to 354 per cent. prem, after amall sales at 352 and 353 per cent. prem., and at 366 and 367 for April; market closes firm at 354. Nationals are enquired for at quotation,

but no sales have been effected.

MARINE INSURANCES.—China Traders and Cantons remain on offer at quotations without business. Unions are enquired for in small lots at $247). No local business in the Northern Insurances to report, but North Chinas are on offer at Tls. 180.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have been placed in small lots at $312), and close steady at $315. Chinas have changed hands at 884. The Directors of the latter Company recom- mend paying a dividend of $6 for 1899 working.

MINING-Punjoms have ruled_very quiet with only small sales at $31. Raubs have further declined to $374 with small sales, and close with sellers at $38. There appear to be no reasons for this sudden drop, except the last comparatively bad crushing (1,260 ̊oz. from 3,100 tons), and the rumour that a large holder of the stock is about to realise. Jelebus have changed hands at quotation. Private advices state that the increased Capital asked for by this Company has been passed by the shareholders. Nothing else to report under this heading.

Docks, Wharves and Godowns,--Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks continue yery quiet with no sales of any importance to report. Kowloon Wharves after sales at $94, $941, and $95-cash have receded again to $94. Wanchai Godowns unchanged and without business.
