ROYAL HONGKONG YACHT CLUB.

On Baturday, 9th inst., the race for the very handsome cup presented by the officers of the Royal Navy was sailed in most disappointing weather. At the start there was a very light wester ly air and the seventeen, yachts drifted down to Channel Books close together, the first five round being Tris, Dart, Marjorie, Meteor, and Gloría. These five had just enough wind to take them scross to North Point where the breeze was 2 little stronger, while the remainder were hope. less drifting about round the Channel Rocks. Iris was first round Meyer's Buoy and stood across into Hunghom Bay, while Gloria work- ing by. Kelatt's Island found much slacker water and finished the first round a long way shead, There was little to choose between the other four, and after rounding the mark Mar- jorie gave up, as did all but the four leaders. The wind round worked round to the north- cast and Gloriu, who had a tremendous lead at Meyer's Buoy on the second round, looked all over a winner, but lost her lead on the best back to Channel Rooks. All in turn, thought themselves sure of the Cup, as the wind veered from one point to another, but as all came in within the space of 24 minutes, the Dart was an easy winner. The times of finishing were :-

GENERAL MEETING.

30

A general meeting of the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club was held in the Cricket Club Pa- vilion on Monday evening, the 11th inst, when the following resolutions were submitted:→→

1. That the Club adopt the new Y.. R. A. Rating Rules and Building Limitations, after the close of the present season, and abolish the Club restrictions.

|

2. That the First Class consist of 24 ft. 1.r. yachts, but the existing boats exceeding 24 ft. new rating be allowed to sail in the 24 ft. class at their new rating, provided they do not exceed 24 ft. old rating, and have not altered their hull.

3. That rule 5 shall read----

"There shall be no time allowances in Club Races for First Class Yachts, except in the case of yachts built before the close of the season 1900-1901, whose new rating, exceeds 24 ft Lr."

4. The Club Rules to be altered accordingly. The Hon. F. H. MAY, C.M.G., occupied the chair. In opening the meeting he said that, as they were aware, the rules as to the rating and the limitations under which their A cold morning and, threatening rain misde boats were now built expired at the end of anything but a pleasant outlook for intending this season, and the committee had had under competitors for the prise presented by the consideration the desirability or otherwise of Boyal Artillery Officers, which took the shape adopting the Y.R.A. rule of rating. from Howe's nose and held his own well, but in the second he was obviously beaten. With a fine display of pluck he kept going, and though for the most time confined to his corner he came up again esch round. Time Klone saved him in the sixth, and the seventh bout saw him at last unable to rise. The final item was the "big event,” a 20-round contest, under Queensberry rules, between Con Sheehan, of H.M. Naval Yard, and Mike Collins (San Francisco), a well-matched pair in height and build, both looking in the best of condition. A very cautions start was made and the first three rounds were quite uneventful. In the fourth the men began to warm up, and the fifth saw Sheehan getting to work in earnest, though Collins did not appear pushed. However, at the end of the round there was an abrupt termi- nation of the affair, Collins striking his op- ponent after "Time" had been called. His friends claimed that he did not hear, but referee Love's resonant voice was plain enough all round the ring. The ending was unsatisfactory, but the great majority of Collin's compatriots acknowledged the justice of the decision. It was a pity that the affair could not go on, the balance in Sheehan's favour being but slight at the time. He shaped well, however, | ́and should do well. Collins has a good record, and as late as 1899 knocked out in six rounds Jones, of the R.W.F., at this port. In 1895 he was Amateur Middle-weight Champion of the Pacific Coast. Flint, of Thomas's Grill Rooms, has challenged the winner.

Mr. J. H. Downs was a volatile referee, Mr. Harmston Love acted as official time-keeper, and Mr. C. Klinck as master of ceremonies. Spectators were rewarded with a full evening's entertainment.

Below we publish the result of the drawing for the four championship in the forthcoming Box- ing Tournament under the able management of Mr. C. T. Robinson.
