A sequel to the recent troubles on H M.S. Barfleur has come to our ears which certainly savours of despotic action on the part of the responsible authorities There existed on board the Barfleur a "Mutual Improvement Society," to which a large number of the officers and men belonged, the object of which was to have weekly meetings for lectures, debates, etc. This has now been suppressed. It is a fact, we believe, that two of the men lately tried by courtmartial were among the members, but so were some hundred others. Is mutual im- provement then so dangerous ?

Juring the recent disturbance in China, hors shoe silver worth some 3,550,000 taels, to gether with some 500,000 koku of rice, fell into the hands of the Japanese troops at Tientsin, Peking and other places. According to news from Tokyo, the rice is being used to feed the troops in China and as wages for the Chinese coolies employed by the army. The horseshoe silver has been transmitted to Shanghai. The Government proposes to purchase gold bullion at Shanghai or bills on London with the silver. We have received from the office of the Kokumin Shimbun, Tokyo, a beautifully print- ed Japanese calendar and a copy of the New Year's Day cdition of the paper. The latter has a sixteen-page illustrated supplement on fine paper, which does the greatest credit to the office. The illustrations, some of which are printed in red, ars of a high order artistically, and encourage the hope that Japan is not for- getting her old culture entirely under the stress of modern civilisation, Cn the bulk of the letterpress we are unfortunately unable to ex- press an opinion, but we can bear witness to the merits of the printing.
