the beautiful words of the composition, and his audience at once felt the response, judging from the many manifestations of approval which greeted each stanza. Mrs. Badeley sing two charming · songs, "Snowflakes and "Who'll buy my Lavender." In these she showed to advantage her pleasing voica and excellent training. The songa were well chosen, and in the sacond part she received an enthusiastic encore for A Life's Lesson." Mrs. Lowson and Mr. Marsh repeated by special request that very excellent rendering of Gounod's "Barcarole." The latter opened the second part with Tosti's 'Beauty's Eyes." We bo- lieve this song was written for Mr. Marsh by Sig- nor Tosti himself. It is a beautiful composition, and last night was excellently produced, showing the versatility of the artist in dealing with sentimental or classical music. We regret to say the effect of the rendering was, however, somewhat marred by many of the audience tak- ing their seats during the first verse, aud, we think, that out of consideration for others in the hall, those gentlemen who wish & cigarette in the interval should either got back in time for the opening, or remain outside till the initial piece is finished. Mr. E. E. Hill sang Abt's “ Ever Thine." He has a really beautiful voice, and if he could get on mora familiar terms with his audience, the effect of his singing would be far more pleasant. On Thursday evening he showed off to great effect the ample range and extent of his vocal power. He was associated later on with Mr. Marsh in the duet "Excelsior," which was well given and received considerable appliuse. Mr. de Graça cvoked an enthusiastic encore for Langey's "Bravura," and in response gave the intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rusticana." Mrs. Lowson sang Tosti's "Good-bye" with intense feeling aud power. Her voice possessed considerable charm, and in response to her well-directed efforts received a rapturous encors. On har welcome reappearance she gave another exhibition of her rare talent, for which she received haarty plaudits. The programms concluded with Gounod's "Nazareth," given by Mr. Marsh and a chorus of eight or ten male voices, which was very effective. The vocal power of Mr. Marsh was again heard to advantage in singing the refrain in the first two versos, and then in the deep volume of tone the chorus gave in the final verse.

The tenth annual athletic meeting promote 1 by the employees of the Taikoo Sugar Refinery took place at Quarry Bay on New Year's Day, and was well patronised by visitin tors both from Hongkong and Kowloon, the day being particularly favourable for the occasion. The programme differed somewhat from that of last year. Throwing the hammer, the high jump, and the six-a-side football match were omitted and a wheelbarrow race and potato race substituted. The Champion's Cup (decid- ed on points), presented by Mr. J. A. Scott, was easily won by J. Hance, who carried off thres first prizes, two seconds, and ong third. The time in the four mile bicycle race was 11m. Ilsec. against 10m. 24488c. last year. The winner (A. E. Alves) had 250 yards' start, the winner last year (T. Shand) having a start of 550 yards.
