CANTON, 29th September.-Silk.-Tsatlees. - No settlements are reported. Re-reels. There has been some enquiry for Re-reels Nos. 1, 2, and 3, but no transactions have been reported. Filatures.-These were almost neglected during the first part of the fortnight, but prices kept their own fairly well. During the latter part of the fortnight a very fair business has been done for Europe. Prices are still very irregular and the high rates asked for 4th crop Silk render business very difficult. Short-reels.-Little has been done in Short-reels for America. Buyers show some interest for forward deliveries, but dealers refuse to sell ahead. Waste.-About 800 bales of Extra-Extra Steam Waste having been settled, the market is rather firm and dealers refuse to make concessions. A few hundred bales of 4th and 5th crop Cocoons are said to have been sold at 8824, whilst 1st, 2nd and 3rd crop Cocoons are offered at $79 per picul. We append quotations in Canton, with laying down cost in London and Lyons, Exchange 4 months' sight, 2/1 and Fcs. 2.64 per Dollar.

Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hongkong, 12th October:--A small demand has been experienced during the past fortnight, but this has been generally expected, as dealers have their bands full with the heavy purchases of the last few weeks, and the enquiry from the country had not reached the proportions anticipated. Settlements are estimated at some 73,000 bales, the majority being booked in the earlier part of the interval, if indeed some portion are not old purchases just reported. Prices have continued steady, and, although here and there slight fluctuations are noticeable, we make no alteration in our quotations and the market may be called unchanged. Holders do not appear anxious sellers, the position being reckoned fairly strong, while, on the other hand, dealers are holding off entirely in the hope of forcing importers to accept a concession.
The salient feature of the interval has been the increasing demand for No. 128. which together with No. 10s. form the bulk of the settlements.
Local Manufacture:-There is no change to note in the quotations of the Hongkong S.W. and Dyeing Mills, which are steady at $90 to $91 for No. 10s., $92 to $93 for No. 128., and $90 for No. 168., at which sales of about 375 bales are reported:
It may interest Indian Spinners to learn that, in common with the Cotton Mill Industry through- out the East, this concern in spite of the best and most efficient management has fallen upon evil days. The last year's working shows a loss of close upon $70,000 and as it is already indebted to the General Managers to the tune of 15 lacs, it is intimated that unless shareholdersf come forward and provide capital to give the Mills another year's trial, "there is no solution of the situation except liquidation."
Japanese Yarn: A concession of 50 cents to one Dollar per bale has induced a fairly large business
