Mr. P. Eduljes says in his Report, dated Hongkong, 28th September:-Towards the close of last mail, reports of the total destruction of the cotton districts in Texas by hurricane greatly strengthened holders, and goods were practically withdrawn from the market by asking advance of $4 to $5 per bale. Dealers now commenced to operate more largely and responded freely to the enhanced cost; during the interval nearly 18,000 bales have changed hands as specified below. The demand still continues and is purely specu. lative, as at the moment there is nothing of importance being done in the interior, but the outlook warrants the action of the speculators. Sufficient rain has fallen in the country, and with prospects of good grain crops and suppression of lawlessness and disorder throught the consuming centres, a brisk winter trade is confidently. expected. The offtake during the interval has again exceeded receipts, and our estimate of stock shows a further falling off and now stands at a very reasonable figure.

Local Manufacture.-Sales of 700 bales No. 10s at from 851 to $92, of the Hongkong, Spinning W. and Dyeing Mills have been reported.

Japanese eSpinnings.-A strong reaction has also been pxperienced in the market for this thread andurices have advanced from $3 to $7 per bale, bqt the advance has checked consump tion and nyers have bestowed. their attention principal on comparative cheaper chops of desir ble Bolybay No. 208. Sales reported are 175 bales Nm 168., Kanegafuchi at $99 and 500 bales No. 20'ó say 100 bales Kanegafuchi at from $39 to $98, 300 bales Settau at from $94 to $101, and 100 ba les Ashai at from $93 to $99, market closing strong

Raw Cotton-Is looking up, and firmly held all round in sympathy with the market for the manufactured article, and as far as Indian staple is concerned the interval has been blank, the ideas of both sellers and buyers being too wide apart to lead to business. We quote to-day

· Bengal $20 to $24, with about 1500 bales in stock. In China descriptions, some inferior parcels of Ningpo and Shanghai changed hands at from $21 to $22 in the beginning of the fortnight, but prices gradually hardened and the market cloes Arm at $24; the total reported business, amoust- ing to 1,250 bales at from $21 to $24; stock niln
