ON GERMANY.-

CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.

Lands. Hotels and BuildING.-Hong- kong Lands in the early part of the week were freely offered at $124 without finding buyers and a fow small lots changed hands at $123. Later however the market improved to $1243 with buyers, and shares were placed at that rate. Closing rate $125 steady Hotels continue neglected with no sales to report West Points have been placed at $48 and $46, closing steady at $47. Humphreys remain unchanged with a small business at quotations.

MISCELLANEOUS.-Green Islands have changed hands at 314 and 314 cum and at $20 and $201 ex. new issue on 31st instant. Watsons have improved to $16 with sales but close with sellers. Electrics have been enquired for at $114 without bringing out many shares. There is nothing further to report under this heading.

JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 11th May.-The market con- tinues dull and inactive with no business of any importance to report. Rates generally have ruled rather weaker.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais, were on offer in the early part of the week at $303, but no business resulted. Later the rate falling a few small lots changed hands at $301 and $800, the market closing somewhat firmer at $302. Nationals unchanged and without business.

Marine InsuraNCES-China Traders have been on offer at $54 without inducing business. Unions have improved to $250 without sales. Cantons are still enquired for at $130 without bringing any shares on the market. North Chinas have been placed at Tls. 165. Straits and Yangtszes unchanged and neglected,

FIRE INSURANCES.-The market continues very quiet, with sellers at quotations and no sales except small ones in Chinas to report.

SHIPPING.—A small demand for Hongkong, Canton and Macaos at $30 has not been met. Indos have ruled steady at $19 with small sales. Douglases are obtainable at $49 but no shares have changed hands. China Manilas and China Mutuals unchanged and without business.

REFINERIES-China Sugars have placed in small lots at $127 and $128 closing with sellers at the former rate. Luzons con- tinue out of favour with sellers at $40 and pro- bable buyers at $38,

MINING-Punjoms have been placed at $5.90 and $6, closing steady at the latter rate. Preferences have been done at $1.20. Olivers on receipt of the 'news of a comparatively unfavourable crashing, have fallen to $4.25 for A's and $3 for B's with little or no business. In the early part of the week A's changed hands at $4.50 and B's at $4.25. Jelebus and Great Easterns have been placed at quotations, the former closing at $12.85 with probable buyers. Raubs continue to decline with small sales at $54 and close with sellers at $534.

DOCKS, WHARves, and GodOWNS.-Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks have been on offer at $490 and small sales have been effected at that rate and, it is reported, at as low as $480. Market closes steady but with probable small sellers at $190. Kowloon Wharfs after sales. in the early week at $87, $871 and $88, have declined again to $87 at which the market closes quiet.

TONNAGE.

HONGKONG, 11th May.-During the past fort- night freights have advanced, owing to the strong demand for tonnage from Saigon. Saigon to Hong- korg, 27 cents per picul is offered for prompt steamers; to one port in Philippines, 50 cents per picul; to one port north coast Java, 48 cents per picul. Moji to Hongkong, $2.80 per ton had been paid, and more tonnage is wanted at this figure; to Singapore, $5 is obtainable. - Java to Hongkong, 40 cents per picul. Sailing vessels.-The British ship

· Hamburg and American ship Manuel Llaguno are reported as having been chartened to load hence for New York.

There is one vessel disengaged in port registering 1,999 tons.
