CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.
if there are many it would appear that I should | HONGKONG AND KOWLOON WHARF have run across at least a few of them.
AND GODOWN COMPANY, LIMITED.
I should like to know what ground he has for stating that the Taiping Rebellion was "for- mented" by the missionaries What exclusive Information has he that convinces him that On the 4th inst, at noon an extraordinary almost all of China's foreign wars and com.general meeting in connection with the above plications were caused by "those who pretend company was held at the company's offices, 2, to teach the Gospel?" To the authority of Connaught road, for the purpose of considering Confucius and the Jesuit mentioned I would add that of an immortal document well-known passed at the extraordinary general meeting as special resolutious the following resolutions in America at least---"Governments derive held on the 18th April:- their just powers from the consent of the gov. erned," etc.
What good end is subserved by the publi- cation of snob a letter? It is not just because I am a missionary that I object to such slurs and reckless aspersions on the missionary body. It is the baseless imputation of low and sordid motives and the implication of wide- spread insincerity. Some people profess to be able to see the hand of Rome in public affairs of all grades of importance, others think the Masons are at the bottom of most public troubles, but your correspondent discerns the insidious arts of those who Protend to Teash the Gospel. There is more than one kind of fanaticism.—
Yours, etc.,
GEO. CAMPBELL,
A VINDICATION OF CHINESE REFORMERS.

Singapore, 30th April, 1900.
THE EDITOR OF ENGLISH NEWSPAPER, HONGKONG.
Sir,-Will you kindly allow me space in your paper to speak something of the Chinese reform- ars and their enemies? at present these reform- ers are receiving very kind treatment from the handa of the British Government and I daresay that without their great help. the reformers would have long ago been finished with. There- fore the Chinese reformers will never forget the British nation for their kindness. You are also aware, I suppose, Mr. Editor, the reformers have enemies in Shanghai, Hongkong and as well as in the Straits Settlements. In Hongkong
these rumours were current:--
1st-The family of Chin Shuyuan, Editor of Thisnnan Shinpao, was arrested by the Chinese authorities.
2nd-The reformers have ordered 7,000 pieces of soldier's uniforms with the intention to rise against China.
3rd-Mr. Kang Yu Wei has used ill words, against the British.
4th-Lo Feng Lob, the Chinese ambassador in London, has seized the Thiennan Shinpao press in Singapore, also they have gone so far as to say two men-of-war were ordered to Singa- pore to arrest. Kang Yu Wei and Chiu Shuyaan. 1
I have to inform you all the above are false rumours; they are quite absurd and untrue. In the Straits a good deal was told against Mr. Kang Yu Wei, and all these you will find in the Straits Newspapers. I understand the Editor of one of the leading papers in the Straits Settlementa is a very good friend of Mr. Lok Chong Yau, the Chinese Consul General in Singapore. The Editor always called on the Consul General and I do not know what con- versations had taken place between them. All I know is what has been published in the New papers which to my knowledge is injurons to the Chinese reformers.-I am, Sir, yours faith- fully,
A CHINAMAN WHO LOVE HIS
