The Report on the Health and Sanitary Condition of the colony for 1899 shows that the estimated population was 259,310. The births were 1,132 and deaths 6,181, of which 1,434 were from plague. The birth-rate was 4.3 per 1,000 as against 47 in 1898; the death. rate 28.8 per 1,000 as against 22:3 in 1898. The death-rates of the different races Whites 125 per 1,000 (16-2 in 1898); Coloured 28'3 (33-6 in 1898); Chinese 24.4 (22:54 in 1898, the increased mortality being due to plague). In the Return of Statistics of Population there seems to be a serious error. The number of inhabitants for 1898 is given at 254,400. There were in 1899 1,132 births and 6,181 deaths. 110,448 immigrants and 61,075 emigrants, Yet the increase of population is given at 4,910 only, though births and immigration give an xçess of 44,324 over deaths and emigration.
