MACAO.

[TROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] -

Macao, 2nd May. I am sorry indeed to have to report that the plague still continues in its full force. In certain quarters of this colony, such as the San-kin, Sacong and S. Lazaro districts, this in only to be expected, as they are the dirtiest parts of the town, and the Government should

■ long time ago have done away with them altogether and thus removed the principal breeding places of disease germs. Another thing also to which the Leal Senado and the Government should see is to check the over. crowding of houses with inhabitants-not only human beings, but also dogs, pigs, fowls, cats, etc., living in rooms only a few feet square, where there is only space for one person, though it is utilised for a family of man, wife, and, children, not to mention various animals. And sometimes one may find more than one family, sách comprising of three or four persons, in a space not larger than a large double-bed. To do away with the plague the Government and the Leal Senado must enforce the spreading of Inhabitants and insist on a larger space for every family.

It is also advisable that those whom it concern should not open the drains during this time of the year, for if the drains are olear there is no use in opening them while if they are choked, the present is no time to alean them. The authorities should order this work to stop at once. At Praia Grande, where such work is going on, I am sorry to say that a few cases of fever of a very bad character have occurred, I wish I were mistaken and that it were not the opening of the drains that caused the mischief, but it is a fact that in the places like Praia Grande fever never has been fatal except this year. The Government is spending much money very uselessly. Why should it not employ the sum in doing away with those filthy quarters where so many plague cases are reported daily? Three years having past without anything being done in this colony, everything is in a state of utter neglect. But now those concerned should take note of what is passing and prepare a long and careful report to present to the new Governor and let him make the necessary inprovements. The drains in the city. I am not going to say much about. A few words will put the case clearly before the public. It is better to have no drains than to have them as they are now.

Mr. King Lein-shau's extradition case still continues. On Monday last a few more wit- the trial will nesses were examined, and now take place, and if the accused is found

handed guilty he will be

to his Government; bat the public which takes an interest in Mr. King can trust in the Chief Justice, Senhor Magalhaes, who knows how to protect an innocent man when he finds him.

TO THE EDITSE OF THE "DAILY PRESS." SIR, I have been asked by many why I do not demand a re-hearing of the second part of the case given against me on the 27th ult. I wish to say that I have done so, and that after two days' consideration the magistrate has de- oided in the negative.

Bo far as I and others can see, the result of the case has only been to set a premium on dis-: orderliness, and I hope we shall not have a crop of troubles springing up, like the Gorgon's teeth, under the present weak-kneed régime.

Trusting you will find space in your columns for these few lines, I am, sir, yours very truly,

THE PREPARATIONS TO RECEIVE

H.M.S."TERRIBLE."

$1

TO THE EDITOR OF THE “DAILY PRESS,'

DEAR SIR,-As I am informed that there may be some misapprehension in the minds of some of the members of the British community here, I am writing this letter to state that the omission to call a public mesting of British Re- sidents in conuection will the preparations for the reception and entertainment of the Captain, officers and crew of H.M.S. Terrible, was simply due to an oversight which was caused by ar- rangements requiring to be very promptly made.

It was the intention of Mr. Francis and my- self, who were the prime movers in this matter, as being the President of the China Association and the Acting President of the Navy League respectively, that all members and classes of the British community should take part in the ce- lebration of welcome, and it is with very great regret that we have learned that some of the community might feel aggrieved by our inad. vertence in not calling a public meeting.-I am, dear sir, yours faithfully,
