JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 5th January. Notwithstanding the New Year holidays, which to some extent interfered with the mark, business has been fairly brisk and rates generally have improved. The West Point Building (ompany and the Hongkong Land Investment Company advertise their meetings for the 24th inst., transfer books closing on the 15th inst. The Wanchai Ware- honse Company also advertises its meeting for 15th instant, transfer books closing on the7 hinst. BANKS. With an improvement in the home rate to £61. 108. Hongkong and Shanghais have advanced to 344 per cent. prem. after small sales at 338, 342, and 343; market closes steady at 344 cash; on time small transactions are re- ported for March at 330. Nationals are weaker at $28 and without business.
MARINE INSURANCES —The market con- tinues very dull with only small sales of China Traders to report at $57. The quotations for the
Northern Insurances are taken from the last Shanghai circulars.
FIRE INSURANCES.-Both Hongkongs and Chinas have changed hands in small lots at quotations, closing steady.
THE HONGKONG 'WEEKLY PRESS AND
SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have been negotiated in fair lots at $30, $30§. and $304 for cash and at equivalent rates for- ward, to March. Indo-Chinas have ruled in some demand at quotation, but few shares are
obtainable and the business has been limited. China Manilas continue on offer at quotation without inducing buyers to come forward. Douglases remain quiet with shares offering at 852 and no sales or buyers. China Mutuals are still in request at quotations without bringing any shares on the market.
REFINERIES-Both China Sugars and Luzons have ruled quite neglected and there are no sales to report.
MINING-Punjoms continue neglected and ont of the market with sellers ruling the mar- ket at $6.75. Charbonuages have improved to $340 with buyers, but noue seem to be obtainable. Queens, Olivers, and Great Easterns have changed hands in small lots at quotations. Jel-hus have found buyers at $124 and $12 75, and Raubs at 8611⁄2 and $62 in small lots, the latter closing at $611.
DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Hong- hong and Whampoa Dooks have ruled much firmer, with small sales at 525, 5274, 530, and 535 per cent prem., closing firm at the last rate. Kowloon Wharves have also improved after sales at 887, and 888 to $:8 Wanchais unchanged and without bus ness. Amoy Docks remain steady at $21 with some business.
LANDS, HOTELS AND BUILDINGS.-Hong. kong Lands have continued in favour and the rate has risen to $120-after sales at $118, $119, and 8119; the market, however, closes with sellers at $119 and with probable buyers at $ 19; on time sales are reported at $122 for February and March. Hotels have ruled much firmer and a large business has been done at $123 to $126 for cash and at $128 to $130 for March; market closes firm at $126.: West Points have likewise experienced a small boom, and a fair number of shares have changed hands at $38, $39, $40, and $41′for cash and at $41 to $42 for 31st inst the market closes at $41 with sellers cash. Humphreys have ruled rather firmer with small sales at $94. Kowloon Lands have been on offer at $28 without finding any-buyers.
COTTONS.-Hongkonga continue on offer at the reduced rate of £53 without sales. In the absence of local business quotations for the Northern Mills are taken from the last Shang- | hai circulars.
Miscellaneous.—StarFerries have changed | hands and are enquired for at.820. Green Islands show a considerable improvement with sales at $27 to $30, olosing firm at $304. Wat- sons have changed hands and are enquired for at $164. Fenwicks have found buyers at 848 and 850, China Providents at 894, and Ices at $134.

From Faigon to Hongkong two steamers have leen taken up at 18 cents, and further tonnage is wanted at 10 cents per picul; to Java, 35 cents per picul is offered for February loading. Java to this port, 35 cents has been paid for dry sugar. Bangkok to Hongkong, no enquiry. Moji to Singapore, $3.40 per ton, to this $3.
