field artillery corps, and the men being thorough-swatow, No. 1, Brown... 6.85 to 6 40 ly acclimatised, might be a considerable recom mendation in the direction of the offer being accepted to proceed to South Africa. If this should be the case, the employers in Singapore are considered by the officers of the S. V. A. to be sufficiently patriotic to allow their men to go. No doubt there would be a good strength available. The 8. V. A. also might be used for garrison duty in Singapore should some of the | regular forces be taken from here.-Straits Times.

and three deaths.

There were 1,742 visitors to the City Hall Museum last wee<, of whom 13 were Europeans. The total number of cases of plague reported during the year 1899 was 1,486. and the deaths 1,428. The mortality was therefore over 96 per cent.

The return of cases of communicable diseases reported last week shows that there were four cases of smallpox with two deaths and four cases of plague with three deaths. One of the cases of smallpox was imported from Haiphong.

Hamilton. the coloured champion of the West Indies. Before the first contest was decided it was announced that Mustor had agreed to meet the winner. Much nterest was, therefore, aronsed in the event. The men were fairly evenly matched las regards physique. Mastor, how erer, had slightly the advantage in height and weight, and it was soon appareut that the chances were that he would be the winner. Though severely punished Hughes held on to the last. In the cleventh ronnd he was knocked over the ropes just as time was called. He came up. however, for the last round and fought it out. The judge. Lieut. H. Dix (of the Navy) assigned the prize to Mastor. Lieut. R. J. B. Jackson, of the Army, was the referee,
