MISCELLANEOUS IMPORTS. SHANGHAI 4th October.-(From Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report Piece Goods. The usual Autuma Race holidays that have intervened siuce we wrote our last Report have really been on this ocensin quite a merciful relief to those engaged in this trade. Many took advantage of them as an excuse to close their books for the time being, though as it turns out there was not much necessity for it as the demand is still very limited. The recovery in Exchange has, however, given the deal ra some encouragement to make enquiries for hard Cargo in the hopes of picking up bargains, but os a rule holders do not care to sell. It was remarked this morning that more dealers had been seen about to-day than for weeks past, and yet very discouraging reports are coming in from the North concerning the unfavourable weather in those Provinces, dispelling all hope of the much needed rain this year, the ground, mean- while, already parched, getting unworkable by the severe cold that has now set in, and preven- ting the sowing of the early Spring crops. Bus- ness with Tientsin is in consequence at an utter standstill, and Newchwang is liable to close almost at any time now. Nor is the state of things better up the River or with Ningpo, from all sides cone complaints, complicated in some parts by decidedly rebellious tendencies, which the hard times in prospect this coming winter are bound to stir up. One of the usual Auctions was dropped this week in consequence of the holidays, which may account for the rather firmer tone shown at the one that did take place, more particularly in some classes of Cotton goods. Woollens on the whole were unsatisfactory, but clearances have been very good of late. Yarns of all descriptions are still strongly held and the business passing is very small. In fact the few sales reported from first hands show rather easier prices. Native Cotton is unchanged, but slightly easier, rates have been offered from India. METALS 6th November (From Messrs. Alor, Bielfeld & Co.'s Report)—There has been very little business done during the week owing to the Autumn Races, but what has been completed shows a tendency on the art of the dealers to approach home rates more nearly. In Metals a few transactions have been closed, as quoted be- low. In connection with these it will be useful to compare the rates with the latest home quota- tions, viz Goffins at 1938. and Steel Plate Cut- tings 1183. for tese pieces and 108s. for mixed lots. The following has been done: - 200 tons Steel Plate Cuttings, test pieces at 112s. 6d, e. i. f.; 200 tons Round Iron at 1238., c. i. f.; 10 tons Goffin Nailrods at 1909. c. i. f.; 100 tons London Horse Shoes at 1048., 100 tons Bale Hoops at 109s. c. i. f.
