After arrival a thorough survey of the boilers: was held, and the furnaces set back in accord.

Adit levels.-A little low grade ore was stop- ance with the recommendations of the surveyors. and no farther trouble has been experienced.ed from these levels and sent to the mill during Except for accident, in connection with which It must be mentioned that not the slightest blame is attached to the engineroom staff, the steamer has proved a valuable acquisition to the fleet, admirably adapted for every branch of our trade as necessity may demand.

After considerable trouble with the contrac-parts of the mine. tor, the New Wharf has been available for use

since the 1st of July last. One side is let to Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, the other side being utilised by the Company's steamers.

The steamers have been maintained in their usual state of efficiency; the Formosa having undergone a very extensive overhaul.

In conclusion it may be mentioned that the amounts appearing as freights due and accounts receivable on 30th June, have all since been collected.

Stope No. 1.-Au uprise was put through to the adit levels from the stope a distance 22 ft., being practically a part of it. This uprise was on good ore all the way and this stope continues to give us considerable good ore, the ore body im- proving in regularity somewhat as the stope

progresses.

Stope No. 2.—This stope with the other work being done on ore is giving us all the ore we can handle at the mine at present, and as it opens up is proving the ore body it is on to be even more entensive in width than it first ap- peared to be as developed by orosscut No. We are taking out the ore here some 30 feet thiok, which is not yet its full thicknes9.

GREAT EASTERN AND CALEDONIAN GOLD MINING CO., LAMITED. The General Agents of the (treat' Eastern and Caledonian Gold Mining Co., Limited, Messrs. Luetgnes. Einstmann and Co., have received the following report from the mines, written by Mr. Thomas Cash

Since my report of the 6th July last, the following work has been done at the different mines to date :-

CALEDONIAN MINE.

The main drive north of the old main underlie shaft has been extended a further distance of 13 feet, making total length of drive from old face 18 feet. The reuf is from 3. to: 5 feet wide. At present the reef in the face is 5 feet wide and gives much better prospects than it did when the drive was started. The drill hole prospects from the face show about 8 dwts. per ton. At first I thought of sinking the air shaft to connect with the new main shaft' directly under the old underlie shaft, but as there is a break in the reef at the bottom of the old shaft we have decided to drive north on the reef 35 or 40 feet and then start the air shaft near the end, It will' then ́ be on the stone all the way to the new level. We will get out a lot of stone from the sinking and will be proving the reef for 70 feet deeper than the present old working. We have already broken about 50 tons of quartz from the drive. The poppet legs for the new main shaft are com. pleted and the truck line to carry the stone direct from the shaft to the battery floor is now bring erected.

BANK OF ENGLAND MINE.

The main drive north has been extended 9 feet, making total length from main shaft 84 feet. In the face there are two reefs, one the banging and the other on the wall. Each reef is about one foot

North drive from Winze-This was driven $112,220,63 | 811 feet on the lode, which is from about 1 foot to 2 feet thick carrying fair gold all the way

6 dwts. of gold per ton, There has not yet been sufficient work done on the hanging wall reef for one to say much about it at pre- sent. It is certainly a new make of stone. No. 1 back stope north on the main reef is now 45 feet long by 42 feet in height. No. 2 is 23 feet long by 52 feet in height. No. 3 is 15 feet long by 55 feet in height. For the last fort-
