SHANGHAI 16th September.- (From Mesers Neë Murray & Co.'s Price Goods Trade Report.)— While there is scarcely any business to report this week it must not be thougth the market Vis in a bad way, as in act there is a quiet under current of enquiry all through, but at such pricés to indicate that dealers are quietly feeling the -position to begin operations after the settlement on the 19th instant. Whether it is that buyers are on their usual waiting game we cannot say, but from present appearances the settlement will be tid- dover very easily, while from what one can gather the position from an importer's point of view is very sound, in reality much better than it has been for some time. Clearances of former pur- a satisfactory chases continue to be made in manner nearly every dependency taking a fair quantity, the only market that appears really anxions for goods being Korea, whose merchants during the past few days, have approached hold rs with a view of laying down new supplies. The prices offered, however, although better than last rates, are so far below the parity of laying down cost that no business has resulted. There is also some movement at Newchwang, but not pronounced enough -o far to be felt here, while Tientsin is quietly looking on. A revival in dem and from the latter quarter is confidently looked for some dealers going so far as to say that orders to buy have actually been received here. 'T'here

is nothing of importance to mention about either the River or Ningpo mr. 918. The Cotton Yarn market is very quiet and prices are easier for Indian Spinnings, while the Local Mills have bad 1 ractically a blank week na far as sales are concerned.

METALS 18th September.-(From Messrs. Aler. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report)-Owing no doubt largely to the near approach of one of the great settling days of the year, there has been very little business put throngh during the last week. The alarming reports fr in the Sorth regarding Plague have not tended to induce a better feeling, orders from there being fewer than ever, while from the other o nanming districts also reper's have been unfavourable. So much is this the case that practically none of the orders usually placed about this time for delivery after the New Year have been booked. We have only the following orders to note, prices at Home not suiting buyers:-60 cases Corrugated Sheet Iron, 24-26 guage £16, c.i.f. 500 cases Tin Plates 168. 6id, c.i.f.
