seem to have ʼn great infinence over their ideas of | ON PARIS.-— value at présent. On the other hand holders are not at all disposed, for the most part, to meet their views, though there is no telling what a sudden scare might do such the disquieting news received a day two since of the outbreak of bubonic plague in Newchwang, Alarmist advics have been received from that Fort to the effect | ON that trade is demorali el, th natives generally being panie stricken, but this is not at all con- firmed by the private advices of the dealers or the action of the merchants, who assort that the market is very good, and this is borne out by the fact that they are steadily buying from the second hand holders. Tientsin: is dovidedly quite, the season, as explained to us, being that the seventh. moon of the Chinese year, is the last month of the Customs' Trotai's (or s me other official's) term of office, and it is the usual thing for him. to make the most of his rapidly expiring opportuni- tian--those acquainted with the trade will under. stand what that mean- J. Ther. is consequently ■ temporary lull in theimport trade, which is resumed when bis sucessor takes office and only the ordin- ary: squeezes are imposed. How many of such Kttle "irregularities " that have become “ old cus. tom exist it is impossible to say, but tlie sooner they: are found out and exposed the batter it will be both for foreign trade and the country generally. | Clearances are keeping up very satisfactorily for other Ports and there is no news of anything to disturb trade. In Szechnen the heat has been intense however, but in this neighbourhood. particularly, the summer has been extraordinarily cool so far, but the rain fall is quite abɛormal. The fruit, and food crops generally, have suffered considerably, and Cotton is running to stalk, but if fine- weather now intervenes the crop will not suffer to any great extent. An average crop will yield 84 to 35 catties to the picul of Seed Cotton, this year, from present appearances, it looks as though it would be about 20 per sent. less. It is n t at all easy to estimate, however, as the planting is done most irregularly and often in little patches covering an area of only a few feet, sometimes on the top of a small mound, the bank of a creek, or the brder of a paddy field In This way it is extremely difficult, if not absolutely Impossible at present to form an approximate iden of the quantity of Cotton grown in hina, but it: does not seem to be much less per acre than is produced in America, notwithstanding the rough and ready way, in which it is cultivated. There in lean doing in Indian Yarn for the reason that Importers have been advised, or instructed from Hombay, to hold for higher prices owing to the big advance that has taken place there on account of the damage done to the Cotton crop by the drought that is prevailing. There is rather more movement in 1 Japanese Spinnings at a further advance and a few contracts have been madeɔat slightly over current rates, but at the close it is said pricer in Japan have gone up the equival at of two taels. Local Spinners remain very firmu and will only sell at a substantial advance. Cotton is "rong no Tla. 14,00 net for best steam machine ginned, but we have not heard of any business nt that price as yet. Ben al Cotton has heen sold during the interval at Tls. 12.50 per picul

AWTALS, rist: August-(From Messrs. Alex. Bjølfeld & Co.■ Report)-Metals remain firm, and Although there have not been many orders placed, yet business has been progressing fairly well; The Iron market is not likely to go down much in the immediate future on a count of big con- tracts that have been secured by foreign firms for railway undertakings in China. The Carnegie firm in America has secured a contract for 180,000 tons of material for the Russian Manchurian railway, and the Hamburg-American line of Steamers have booked 90,000 to 100,000 tone of the rame material for the German colony at Tängtau. The fulfilinent of these orders will naturally, give a considerable impetunto iron imports. A small error crept into last week's report which we now amend. Instead of 700 tons of London Horse Shoes at 88%, the figures should have been 987. Tran-actions during the week wer:-90 cases Yellow Metal Sheathing £70 to £73 per ton. 61 tons Old Guide Rope 1166/ c.i.f. &c.
