THE UN LOONG MURDER. COMMUTATION OF SENTENCES.

Our readers will remember that on the 4th inst. Ng Ki Cheung, Ng Tang, and Liu Tak Lup were sentenced to death for the murder of Chan Kwai Tsui Tui at Un Loong on the 18th April. The jury recommended second prisoner to mercy on the ground that though present he took no active part in the proceedings, and consequent ly the Acting Chief Justice (the Hon. W. Meigh Goodman) said he would forward the recommen. dation to the Governor and he had no doubt it would receive every consideration from His Excellency.

$8,000 in money and goods being taken away. About forty or fifty armed robbers broke open the door, terrrorised the inmates of the esta blishment, and quietly collected their booty and departed.

The Saichiu brigands have dispersed and are now raising disturbances in other districts. Only a few of them have been killed by the Im. perial troops, and four or five men said to be chiefs, though their leadership is doubtful, have been captured. The Imperial troops worked great destruction in the villages, killing a num- ber of innocent people and practising great cruelty. Childern under five years of ago had their necks wrung and those over that age were put to the sword.

[The slaughter in the villages was probably in connection with the suppression of the clau fight between the Lo and Kwan clans, which affair was separate altogether from the brigand rebellion. The Lo clan fired on the tropps sent. to put an end to the fight, by mistake as they afterwards alleged, but General Liu Yang-fu did not accept the excuse and threatened to wipe out the Lo clan and utterly destroy their village and this threat he appears to have carried into execution.-Ed.]

THE ALLEGED SLIZURE OF SAN- CHAU BY THE FRENCH.

THE STATEMENT WITHDRAWN AND

CONTRADICTED.

The Macao Lusitano of the 20th August says it was in error in stating in its preceding num- ber that the French had occupied Sanchan. The remarks made by the Daily Press on the subject are translated and our contemporary proceeds :-

"It is possible that equal surprise may have been felt by other influential journ® als always watchful of what is passing and even of what is said in our modest weekly. The nearest point to Macao occupied by the French is, we believe, Kwangchowwan, and their presence there is known to all the world. The correction of the mistake does not in any way alter the viewexpressed in our ́article.” .

The article referred to advocated an extension of the boundaries of Macao, and the alleged proximity of the French at Sanchau was one the arguments advanced as showing the desira- bility of such extension.

THE SAICHIU DISTURBANCES.

A Canton correspondent writes :----- The steamer Taksing while on a voyage from Canton to Kutsun on the 15th inst. was at- tacked by pirates. She was off Titkong in the Tangkun district, when several snake boats came alongside and at the same time some forty pirates who had gone on board as pas- sengers rose and pointed their revolvers at the other passengers to frighten them. They then ransacked the luggage and took all the money and valuables. A Chinese passenger who loved tors have the pleasure of coming before you

him with the butt of his revolver. There was
