'HANGHAI, 29th July,-(From Messrs. Nos! Murray & Co.'s Pieu Goods Trad Report. Although our market has not been quite so active this week it is none the less strong, and a good forward business of which it is impossible to get any particulars, or even to gauge the extent, has again been done. The demand has comprised all varieties of Grey and White goods and operators seem to be getting less particular about the price and date of shipment. The comparative paucity of the sales reported is no doubt du to the abort. ness of available -ap slies, both in stock or for near arrival, and must not be attributed to any falling off in the demand. This continues as strong as ever, und, so long as the country remains in its present state of peace and comparative prosperity, there seeins little doubt but that the consumptive requirements will, if anything, increase, and al- though it may be necessary to reach caution when the supply begins to overtake the demand there can be no necessity of doing an now, or for some months to come. That the goods are actually going into comsumption is beyond question, and the experiences of this week in many quarters, where the charances have been heavy, especially for this time of the year, is sufficient evidence, and the markets at all our dependencies are in a healthy condition. Money is more plentiful and easier than it has been for a long time, the trade has for quite a lengthy spell be undisturbed, by violently fluctuating Exchanges, and there seem no reason to anticipate any changes in these rez- pects in the near future, in fact everything points the other way. There can be little doubt of the effect that will follow the commencement of the Railway building, which may reasonably be ex- pected very soon now, when lucrative employmens will be given to thousands of labourers who are only eking out a bare existence at present and who will then surely be in a better position tas enjoy for themselves and provide their families with the luxuries of foreigű made articles. The possibilities of the future trade with this country ar unfat! omable, for, a- we have frequently cor- tended, so far, very little beyond the neighbours bool of the Treaty Ports, which, with but afw exceptions, do 1 of in any way compare with the populous districts to the interior that are simply waiting to be brought into communication w th the outer world, and this will be done so soon as the proposed big trunk lines are started The increase trade will mean increased revenue, and there will be no difficulty then in providing suff. cient security. What the home manufa turer. will have to see to is that they are prepared to meet the increased demand et prices that will not invite others to enter into competition. Encour- aged by the good prices that have been realised recently the Auction houses put up two or three times the usual quantity this week, with the natural consequence of a big drop in prices, but it is in do way indicative of any weakness in the market. It shows simply the disapprobation of the buyers at the attempt to rush them.

METALS, 31st July.-(From Messrs. Alex. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report)-The home market is still about the same; but locally the market amongst the natives shows an improvement. Nuilrods can be sold at from Tis. 3 60 tr Tis 3.65 a picul by the native dealers. The value of Old Iron shows an upward tendency: but at present the demand for New Iron and Nailrods predom- inates. We are able to report the following: 5.000 bundles Rejected Nail Rod-and- at Tls. 2.87; 4,00 do. do, at 'l'ls. 3.00; 0 tona Sarap Iron at Tla. 1.88; 10 tons Short Hoops at Tls. 2.56; 15
