A fatal accident occurred to one of the petty officers of H.M.S. Orlando, on the 29th June, at Kuala Muda in Province Wellesley. Com mander Charlton and some officers were ont on a shooting expedition on the river. While the party in the steam-pinnace of the man-of-war were moving about the coxswain fell into the water. Commander Charlton jumped overboard and endeavoured with Lieut. Hyde, to rescue the mau, but was unsuccessful, owing to the very strong current, and was picked up later in an exhausted condition. The coxswain was carried away by the current and disappeared. The body was afterwards found, and the burial took place on the 2nd instant. The deceased was a second class petty officer, named Edward Holloway 2 years of age, and hailing from Bermondsey. He was unmarried and was the support of his mother.—Straits Times.

Mr. W.D. Thomae, (who will be well remem bered as formerly with the late firm of Becher, Louis & Co., in Singapore), whose firm has its present field of mining enterprise in Norway, writes: I hear mining is generally looking up well in the Malay Peninsula. I should like to be able to assist in proving what I have con- tended ever since I have known the Peninsula, namely, that god gold mines would undoubted- | to date are :~ ly be proved there by competent systematic and economic development. Blundering mismanage- ment and incompetency have succeeded in giving it a bad name, the effects of which, I am afraid, it will be difficult to neutralise Raub is having its effect in improving the tone of public opinion. When wil they be working their sixty heads? On this side, unfortunately, no one knows anything of the Malay Peninsula, and the few who do won't look at it. Once bitten twice shy. As usual the bulk of the business in Black Tea is being done at Hai kow and by Russian hoyers. The size of the second crop is not yet a certained, but it is not expected to excerd las! year'. In quality it shows the same freedom from dauge as cara- terised the first crop. Green Tea-The latest estimate of the Japan Yokohama crop is 6 to 8 million pounds in excess of last senson's yield and Chipa Tea will be farther handicaped by babolition of the Export Duty of Yen Lapical on the 17th instant. Values on overland musters of Pi gaueys have been r«- ceived and they indicate tha there is little or no margin for profit on present prices current here. Pingsuly-Third Gunpowders, and ordinary Young Hysons have been taken freely out of chops at Tis, 16/20 for the former and Tis. 17/18 for the latter, whilst the better lines of Gunpow. ders and Imperials have met with partial demand at about forur rates. Quality considered the e Teas are good value and compare favourably with similar lines in Country Tas. Teamen are diffi- cult to deal with and there are persistent rumours current amongst Natives to the effect that the second crop will be poor in quality and reduced in quantity, «wing to the rainy weather prevalent at the time of pieling. From ungepared leaf we have seen, web lieve the rumours as to quality to be well gronded, but with the present string demand for lines under Tls, 2) we are sceptical | Cheong Wo 14/16, £790 for H.
