No doubt, however, the Chinese will gradually come round to the home demands, s stocks diminish and need replenishing, and the Chinese see they cannot buy for less. JOINT STOCK SHARES, HONGKONG, 7th July-Rates continue to rule strong and a fair business has been transacted during the week under review.

BANKS Hongkong and Shanghais were enquired for in the early part of the week at 300 to 302 per cent. prem. and a few small lots changed hands at those rates. Later, the demand continuing, and the London rate hav- ing advanced to £61, shares changed hands at 3051, 306, and 308 per cent prem. and at time of closing could be placed at the last mentioned rate. On time an unsatisfied demand exists at better than equivalent rates. Nation. als are in demand at $21, but shares do no seem to be procurable and there is no business to report.

MARINE INSURANCES.- -China Traders have changed hands at $614 and $62, closing with sellers at the latter rate. Unions

continue neglected with no business, also the Northern Insurances. Straits have found buyers at $64, and Cantons at $140.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs continue on offer at $312) without inducing business. Chinas have changed hands at $89 and $88). Both stocks close quiet at quotations.

SHIPPING. Hongkong. Canton and Macaos- have improved to $304, after sales in the early part of the week at $30, market closing firm at the former rate. Indos have ruled steady with small sales at $69) cum div. Douglases have changed hands at $58, and China Manilas at $91. China Mutuals unchanged and without business.

REFINERIES-China Sugars have found cash bayers at $174,

1,81733, and 8174, whilst on time shares have changed bauds, at $179 and $180 for September, and sales are reported at 8178 for Angust and September. MINING. Punjoms have ruled steady to quiet and have been negotiated at $15, $15.10, and later at $14.75. market closing quiet at $14.75. Charbonnages have found further buyers at $255, but close with sellers at that rate. Queens continue quiet and out of the market at 473 cents. Olivers on receipt of news of a good crushing (323 oz. from 393 tons) in June and of 218 oz. from 211 tons in last fortnight rapidly jumped to $4 and later to $5 after
