THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND.
ment noted last week, both Tientsin and New | chwang being very strong, notwiths'anding the endeavours of some of the buyers for the former to establish a contrary impression here. Ameri- can goods are still attracting most attention, but as anticipated, more interest is beginning to be shown for Manchester makes, quite a fair amount of business being reported this week, though prices do not show the same improvement. În fact there is little or no advance noticeable, while at the Auctions the tendency was certainly lower. It is really difficult to see the reason for this, for there is no sign of any weakness in the home market and the goods coming along now were not bought at the lowest point, while it is quite im; ossible to replace sales at current rates. The Ningpo and River markets have evidently hot got into full swing yet, possibly owing to the financial troubles of last year, but a more satis- factory state of affairs may prevail after the next settling day. Fluctuations in Exchange, though of no great voilence, have a disquieting effect on the market, every little movement being so care- fully watched, and even anticipated by the dealers now. Business here is not nearly 80 pleasant a- it used to be before they began to know so much! The Yarn market is easier for Indian Spinning, which is accounted for by the improvement in Buper Exchange and heavy arrival Japanese are firmer especially No. 168., and Lo al pin- nings continue in good demand, the sales this week reaching nearly 4,000 bales at steady pricva, Cotton is at a stand ́s ill. Native holders asking Tls. 14.20 for best Machine ginned, but the price fixed by the Mill Owners' Association is only Tle, 13.75. Ningpo Cotton is offering at 'T'le, 940 without finding buyers, but Country cargo has been bought at Tls. 12.80,
METALS, 24th April.--(From Messrs. Alte, Bielfeld & Co.'s Report),-Metals.-During the past week 640 ton of London Horse Shoes and Cart Tyres have been done, but we are not quite certain as to the exact price, but we believe ar 8 8./868. for the former and for the latter 1068./ 1478, 6d. We bave also heard of Black Suet Iren 26/28 gauge being sold at £9.16 to £10
per ton. Stock at home of old material is becoming small, most of it having a ready been shipped to the East and contracted for, and the sellers at home
do not care to operate unless they obtain their own prices, consequently quotations are getting firmer every day.
JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 28th April.-With the excep- tions of Hongkong and Shanghai Banks and Indos, in both of which a fair business has been transacted, the market has continued dull and there is but little to report.
