[April 22, 1899. difficulty in obtaining anything freeh, sreoßt for very distant › delivery, a speculative enquiry i springing up for old lots in stook and better prices are being offered. Szechuen appears to have quieted down again and ordere uro commencing to come, but so far little has been dono except in Yarns, Judging by the Auctions there can be no great demand for the more neighbouring markets, as the prices paid certain- ly do not bear out our remarks in the preceding paragraph, Woollens especially being very slack. The Tarn market has withstood the enòribus influx of Indian Spinnings advised in our last, and prices have recovered about half a tale,a'good demand still continuing forthese, as well as {Ja- panese andLocal makes, both of which show an Increasing enquiry.
METALS, 17th April-(From "Mosers Alex. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report). There havo `been no transactions during the week. 'Home quotations for Nailrods are 1418. while cargo from stook- amongst the Chinose is Tls. 8.10 per picul or about 180s. Consequently there can be no business with importers until present stooks are exhausted. There is very little demand at present from the -outside consuming districts.

SHANGHAI, 15th April.-(From Mesers. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report.)———- Piece Goods.-The signs of improvement in our market, which we mentioned last week are tak- ing their time in developing, but are детег- theless real. Chief attention, however, continues to be paid to American goods, in which a considerable business has been done both from stock to arrive, though only a comparative few of the sales are reported, those that are not adequately representing the actual advance that has has taken place, and we regret we are not in a position to give the quotations. It may be some guide to mention that we are credibly informed the prices paid in some ca-es are within measurable distance of the replacing cost, which implies an advance of about ten per cent, and this the sales we quote certainly do not show, many of them being about on a par with the prices ruling when the market opened The feeling is gaining ground that, in spite of what appeared to be dangerously heavy purchases for this market, the supply will not be sufficient for the demand, and beyond a few comparatively small parcela no more is obtainable, except for very late delivery. The Native holders have been busy reselling, fully 8,000 bales, it is said, having having changed hands during the interval, over which they must have scored heavily. The chief demand is fr Tientsin, where, according to the latest advices have gone up a mace and the sup- ply is going rapidly into consumption. New- chwang is backing up it is neighbour somewhat, there being a good demand at higher prices for all suitable qualities. It remains now for English goods to follow the lead of the American makes, and, considering the great difference there is between the replacing cost and the current rates here now, it is difficult to see that they can do otherwise. There is any amount of enquiry for almost all descriptions, but it does not appear to get any further, holders, however, will probably have their opportunity before long now as the home market keeps very firm. More attention is being paid to Fancy makes, and owing to the
