The Adjutant of the Volunteer Corps is taking Shanghai and Hankow... 22,783,272 advantage of the trouble in connection with our new territory to endeavour to get recruits. He is wise, as it has been over and over again proved that there is nothing like a chance of active work for inducing young men to flock to the standard. The Volunteer force in England was originated owing to a scare of invasion from France, and the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, which had be- come moribund, was revived with vigour at the time of the Tientsin massacre.
