given in honour of Lord Charles Beresford. He said, in substance, that we should have more battleships on this station, and that if

any of our best ships are recalled, they should not leave this station until replaced by equally effec. tive fighting machines. I believe I am echoing the opinion of a majority of Leaguers in the East when I go further than Mr. Pollock and say that no ship should be withdrawn until replaced by a better manned, armed, and speedier vessel.

In the hope that you will excuse the length of this intrusion on your valuable time, and that this picture may help Leaguers at home to realize the naval situation as it is to-day out here,-I have the honour, to be, sir, your obedi- ent servant,

On Saturday the fifth annual athletic meet- ing in connection with the Victoria Recreation Club took place on the Hongkong Football Club Ground at Happy Valley. Fenning, played several selec- tions of music, including the following:—March, "Piff Paff," Fenning (arrang.); Fantasia, Populonia," Williams; Valse, "Ballscenen," Czibulka; Grand Selection, “The Circus Girl," Caryll; Mazurka Militaire, "Sabre an Clair," Missa; Descriptive, "The Darkey's Dream," Lansing.

The first event decided was the long jump, which F. H. Kew had won three years in suc- cession. This year, however, he gave place to P. Hyndman. The distance was 18.3, whilst Kow's distance last year was 18.7, the year before 19.10, and in 1896 18.9, Throwing the cricket ball was won by J. M. S. Machado, but as there was a strong gasty wind blowing, the distance was only 90 yards; last year the Rev. G. R. Vallings threw the ball 104 yards and the year before 944 yards. The 120 yards flat race was run by Lieut. Hall in exactly the same time as last year and in 1896-12† 800., J. M. V. dos Remedios winning last year and F. H. Kew in 1896. Kew also came in first in 1897, when his time was 12. Considerable interest was aroused by the bicycle races, for which there were some capital entries. Premier honours in the mile handicap were carried off by T. Benning (120 yards start), A. McKirdy, the winner in '97 and '96, being third man, and A. E, Alves, who rode first 12 months ago, out of it. Benning also beat all competitors in the two miles and the three miles, MoKirdy, who won both last year, being out of the former and. riding third in the latter. Having won it three years in succession, F. H. Kew last year carried off the Challenge Cup presented by the Victoria Recreation Club for the 100 yards flat race. He again proved the best man, and also reduced his time, which was 101 seconds against 11 seconds in '98, 101 seconds in '97, and 104 in '96. Kew was equally suc cessful in winning the Challenge cup offered for the 440 yards flat race. The cup has to be won two years in succession before becoming the property of a competitor. Kew carried it off in 97, and as he came in first last year he now carries it off again. His time was 573 secs., against 1 min. 6 sens. in '98, 54 Beca, in '97, and 514 secs, in '96. The Veterans' Race was won by Neil McDonald, and W. 8. Bailey, the secretary of the club, came in first in the officials' race.

At the conclusion of the sports Mrs. Gas- coigne presented the prizes.
