THE GREEN ISLAND CEMENT CO., LIMITED.

The following is the report for presentation to the shareholders at the tenth ordinary general meeting to be held at the office of the general managers on Wednesday, 22nd March,

at noon :-

Annexed we have the pleasure to lay before shareholders a statement of the Company for the year ended 31st December, 1898.

The net profit, including the amount brought 74,212.09

forward from the previous year, amounts to 100,000.00 | 85,317.44. which it is proposed to carry forward to the credit of next year's account. It bas heen decided to recommend this course instead of paying a dividend, as usual, as the building of the new factory at Hok. Un is absorbing all the Company's present funds and it is hoped in this way to avoid having to raise further capitul. So far as can now be seen the original estimates of cost will not be exceeded but there will be no sarplus, while on the other hand money will of course be required for working (688,572.24 | capital and for carrying larger stocks of raw

mate rial and finished cement in future.

LUZON SUGAR REFINING CO.,

LIMITED.

The following is the report for presentation to the shareholders at the seventeenth ordinary annual meeting to be held at the offices of the General Agents, at 12.30 p.m. on Thursday, 23rd March :~~-~

The General Agents beg to submit to share holders their report on the business of the Company during the year 1898, with a state- ment of accounts to 31st December last, which they regret should be unsatisfactory.

In consequence of the disturbed state of affairs in the Philippines, work was suspended at the refinery during the greater portion of the year, and beyond supplying the limited local demand for refined sugar, no profitable outlet could be found for stocks on hand.

laclusive of $5,900.31 brought forward from the year 1897 the net loss on working amounts to $9,819.06, which is carried forward to the current year..

CONSULTING COMMITTEE, The Consulting Committee consists of Messrs. D. Gillies and J. H. Lewis, who offer themselves for re-election.

AUDITOR.

The accounts have been audited by. Mr. Thomas Arnold, who offers himself for re- election.

Sales during the year show a falling off but rather better prices were obtained, and the result is therefore very little less than that of the previous twelve mouths. After many trials and disappointments all the difficulties in the way of burning the new kilu at Green Island wers overconis, and as auticipated the kiln has proved a decided acquisition. The contractor for the Works at Hok Un has not made the progress we expected but we hope that Septem- ber will see everything there ready for com- mecing operations. At Deep Water Bay the work has suffered greatly from s okness and mortality amongst the employés and from the consequent changes in the staff, &c. The profit is still very small but much time has been given to re-organizing and increasing the plant and machinery, improving the site, economising labour, &c., the benefit of all of which is already felt in a considerably larger output.
