AN AMUSING CRICKET MATCH
**
"
"
Visitors to the Happy Valley Recreation Ground on Saturday were treated to an amus- ing cricket match by the sailors of H.M.S. Victorious. The ship's recognised team tried conclusions with an eleven of the minstrel troup, the latter appearing in various fancy costumes, impersonating well-known stage and other characters. The make-ups were extremely good, and following are the names of the eleven and the characters impersonated: -Denyer represented Danville; Preston, Loftus; "Quinnel, "a housemaid; " Cooper, Gostelo; " Cook, "Stratton; Lewis, Buffalo Bill" Kaibbs, "Lord Kitchener; Wilson, Irilby;" Powell, a Jockey Moseley, "a clown;" Miller, “an Admiral," The other team was represented by Smith, Carter, Copeland, Dadd, Falmer, Hazell, Cawdron, Scofield, Sterkey, May, and Tim- bey Messrs. White and McKnee were the ampires. Smith beat Cook in the "toss-up". and elected to go to the wickets first. From the dressing tent the teams marched to the pitch in pairs, and those who were dressed as ladies caused much laughter by their loving attentions to their partners; but immediately the game was started they became deadly rivals for match honours. From start to finish the game was full
of amusing incidents. For instance, when Smith received his first ball and put it through the slips, to his consternation he found his wicket disturbed. Ou looking into the matter he discovered that the wicket keeper had a piece of string attached to one of the stumps. Although all kinds of tricks were played upon the bals- meu, such as falling in front of them when running and stopping their progress to and from the wickets by other means, after over an hour's
play only two wickets bad fallen, and then the captain declared the innings closed, so as to give the -opposing side a chance to bat; but after their acrobatic performances and plenty of leather bunting, the minstrel team were not in par ticularly good form, and were quickly disposed of. So much interest was taken in the tactics of those who were in fancy costume that no score was kept, but the minstrel team failed to reach the figures the ship's team did. The next per- formance some of the crew of this ship intend to give is a fancy fress football match, which should afford more amusement than even a game of cricket. When it is intended to pay the match, it is hoped that previous notice will be given to the press, so that the public may have an opportunity of attending to parti- cipate in the fun.
FOOTBALL.
CRUSHING DEFEAT of
THE ARTILLERY BY THE VICTORIOUS," H.M.S. Victorious football team yesterday were victorious indeed; the players composing it managed to inflict upon the 25th Eastern Artillery team a defeat to the tune of nine goals to nil Play started just after four o'clock, and had been in progress about two minutes, when the Naval men bombarded the Artillery citadel, and Hallam sent the ball spinning throngh, giving Croft no chance whatever to save. By very good combination the seamen again attacked, and five minutes after the first goal was scored Pinner again did the needful. Immediately after another rush was made and out of a scrimmage around the uprights, Lismore cleverly secured and notched a third goal. Three goals in about ten minutes. must certainly be something like a record in Hongkong. The Artillery then had a look in, and the ball was taken dangerously, near the
